COMING BY-ELECTION

NO DEMOCRAT CANDIDATE

The following statement has been issued by Mr. A. E. Davey on behalf of the Dominion executive of the New Zealand Democrat Political Organisation:— "Although the Democrat Party ,is definitely opposed to the socialistic policy of both the Nationalists and the Labour Parties, the Democrat organisation has no intention of contesting the Lyttelton by-election, for the following reasons:—

1. In view of the nearness of the General Election we consider that such a by-election is a sheer waste of public money, and it will serve no useful purpose.

2. In our opinion, the Labour candidate should be elected unopposed, for the above reason, and, in addition, that his election would make no difference to the position of the parties in the House.

"We wish to state quite definitely, however, that we will contest the Lyttelton seat at the General Election. It is our purpose to contest every constituency in New Zealand, and our candidates, including our candidate for Lyttelton, will be announced in due course."
