PROFESSOR H. STEWART

NOTABLE CAREER

(Tioceived September 20, '-.."> p.m.) LONDON, September 28. Tho death occurred of Professor Hugh Stewart, a passenger aboard the Akaroa while en route from New Zealand. The body was buried at sea.

The late Professor Stewart left ihc Dominion in August of last year, having received appointment to Leeds University under a system of exchange arranged by the New Zealand Government. Before leaving New Zealand Professor Stewart was attached to several Ghristehurch. organisations, mostly those which have the interests of the returned soldier at heart, lie was, during that period, a professor at tho Canterbury University College, where _he taught the classics. Prior to cuming to Now Zealand, Professor Stewart was lecturer in Latin at Liverpool. University, remaining there from 1909 to 1012, but when the Great War broke out he threw up his studies in Chistchurch, and donned khaki as colonel of tho Canterbury Regiment. He served throughout Gallipoli, receiving the M.C. and the Croix de Guerre. When that campaign ended, Colonel Stewart find his regiment were transferred to France, where he was again honoured by receiving a D.5.0., to which was added a bar in 1917. After his return to New Zealand at the closo of tho war Colonel Stewart was transferred to tho Reserve of Officers, but in 1925 he received appointment as colonel commanding the South Island Infantry Brigade, which he resigned to return to his native land. Professor Stewart was held -in great esteem by the executive and members of the-Canterbury Patriotic Fund, on which lie sat as a representative of the Returned Soldiers Association. He was passionately fond of outside life, his chief recreation in this direction being climbing. There were very few peaks of any difficulty in tho Southern Alps which he did not conquer during his residence in New Zealand, and his tramping in various parts of the South Island was considerable. Professor■ Stewart also wrote a number of books on classical subjects, but he was best known as a writer in this country as tho author of "The Official History of the Now Zealand Division.'' Professor Stewart revisited New Zealand last month as a roundtrip passenger on tho Akaroa.
