MR. J. J- DOUGALL

The death is reported in a Press Association message from Christchurch of Mr, J. J. Dougall, one of the oldest and best-known members of the legal profession in that city. The late Mr. Dougall was born in Aberdeen in 1860, and was educated at Grcyfriars School, Aberdeen, and, after his arrival in New Zealand, at Gee s School. Christchurch. He was prominent in civic affairs in Christchurch tor many years, being a member of the Eiccarton Road Board from 1901 unti 1910, one of the original members ot the Christehurch. Tramway Board, formed in 1904, a member of the Christchurch City Council for many years, and- Mayor in 1912, and a member of the Lyttelton Harbour Board for six years. The late Mr. Dougall was par-1 ticularly active in Freemasonry, and rose to the highest rank in tho craft m New Zealand. Mr. Dougall was Provincial Grand Master for tho Canterbury district in 1900 with honoris causa rank, and in 1906 and 1007 ho was Grand Registrar. In 1011 he was elected Deputy Grand Master for New Zealand, and he held the office of Grand Master in 1914 and 1915. The installation in the latter year took place in the Town Hall, Wellington/and Mr. Dougall made a memorable speech which was largely i instrumental in establishing turf Masonic War. Benevolent Fund. Amongst other activities ho was president of the National League for a period of five years; president of the Christchurch branch of tho Navy League from 1912 till 1915, and for a further period from 1922, and Dominion president in 1926 and 1930; an ori-] ginal member of the Canterbury Patriotic Society; a member of the Patriotic Societies advisory board; and a member of the Canterbury College Board of Governors. • Mr. Dougall was a captain in the Canterbury Engineers, and held the V.D. decoration.
