A SURPRISE RESULT

FELICITATION'S SUCCESS

INTERNATIONAL RACE

United Press Association—By Electric Tele-

' eraph—Copyright. (Received June 22, 12.50 p.m.)

LONDON June 21,

Ono of the biggest surprises in the long history of the Ascot Gold Cup was recorded on the third day of the Royal Ascot Meeting today when H.H. the Aga Khan's, four-year-old horse Felicitation romped home at the head of a distinguished field of a truly international character. Among tlie eight starters were last year's Derby winner Hyperion, the American crack Mate, tho Italian champion. Crapom, and tho' leading French stayer Thor 11. Yet Felicitation,, who had a rather disappointing three-year-old season last year, was to dominate tha situation over tho. closihg stages and to win in a common canter.-

The result of the race was:—

ASCOT GOLD CUP, a sweepstakes of £50 eapli, with gold cup value £500 and £3500 in specie /added; second £700, third £300; for entire colts and fillies three years old and over; once round, 2J miles. H.H. Aga Khan's b h Felicitation, ,by Colorado—Felieita, by Cantilever, 4yrs, 9.0 .... —'..... 1 M. M; Boussac's b h Thor 11, by Ksar—Lasarte, 4yrs, 9.0' 2 Lord Derby's eh h Hyperion, by Gainsborough—Selene, 4yrs, 9.0 3

Ten started. Won by "eight lengths, one and a half lengths between second and third. Winner trained by Frank Butters at Newmarket. ;

Until yesterday, when he' galloped a moderate field to a standstill in the Churchill Stakes, 2 miles, Felicitation had not won 'a race since his two-year-old days. That success hardly indicated any likelihood of his repeating the pei-formanco over today's champion field. Yet ho did it, and he did it decisively. Hyperion,.his* easy victor in last year's St. Leger, was hopelessly outclassed today. /Felicitation went to the front seven furlongs from' homeland that was to prove the end of the race, so. far as the opposition was concerned.
