OBITUARY
MR. J. S. FLETCHER
(By Telegraph—Press Association;) AUCKLAND, This Day. Tho death occurred this morning of Mr. John S. Fletcher, a former member of Parliament for Grey Lynn. • Mr. John. S. Fletcher was returned in Grey Lynn in the interests of tho United Party at the 1928 election. He was born iv Scotland, where he received his secondary and college. education by means of scholarships. ■ At the age of 24 he was appointed headmaster of tho technical and commercial classes conducted by the Kirkintilloch School Board. Mr. Fletcher was. later secretary of the Scottish .Class Teachers' Association and a member of the committee of the Scottish Educational Institute, living in Glasgow, where he also served as vice-president of the V.M.C.A. Eighteen years ago ho came to New Zealand and joined his brothers in the Fletcher Construction Company. After travelling through Grea.t Britain, the United States, and Canada, to study tlys latest methods of construction, Mr. Fletcher . became a, director of the firm, and later manager at Dunedin, whore he was a member of tho executive of the Dunedin Manufacturers' Association. Retiring from business for health reasons, Mr. Fletcher became a student of political,. and economic questions. He was keenly interested in sport, in. his earlier days playing Association football and cricket, and was also a keen, bowler. Ho left the United Party to becomS an Independent, and at the last General Election was defeated by Mr. J. A. Lee (Labour).
