DR. W. S. LITTLEJOHN

FORMER HEAD OF NELSON

COLLEGE

MELBOURNE, October 8. The death occurred here today of Dr. W. 8: Little John, principal of Scotch College, from pneumonia, following influonza. Dr. Littlejohn was 74 years of age, and was formerly principal of Nelson College. By the death of Dr. 111110,101111 Australa has lost a man who .will long be regarded as one of the Commonwealth s great headmasters. His intention to retire on, account of ill health at the end of this year was announced recently, and had he survived he would have completed exactly 30 years as headmaster of Scotch College, Melbourne, during which time the school's roll was increased from1 240 to over 1000. • Born in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, Dr. Littlejohn was 74 the week hia retirement was announced. After graduatiitg at the Aberdeen University and serving as an assistant master at the Melrose boarding school, he came to New Zealand in 1881 to become mathematics and science master at Nelson College. He became principal in 1899, and beforo he left at the beginning of 1904 to succeed Dr. Alexander Morrison as principal of Scotch College the attendance at the college had been doubled and the number of boarders trebled. Dr. Littlejohn's life was given entirely to education, and for many years ho was a momber of the council of Melbourne University. Dr. Littlejohn is survived by a widow, formerly a Miss Berry, of Scotland, and a family of five, two sons and three daughters, both the sons and one of the danghters being doctors in Melbourne. His mother, who is nearly 97, lives at Lower Hutt, and there are two brothers and two sisters in New Zealand. The brothers are Messrs. J. G. Littlejohn (City Engineer, Nelson) and H. W. Littlejohn, optician, Wellington, and the sisters "are Miss E. A. Littlejohn, who lives with her mother, and Mrs. J. Lowe, of Hawaii.
