*Mr. S. W. M. Stilling, New Zealand representative of the Australian National Travel Association, returned from Sydney today by the Makura. Earl Beauchamp, a former Governor of New South Wales, is a through passenger to Tahiti by the Makura, which arrived today from Sydney. Mr. George G. Harrap, managing director of the publishing firm of George G. Harrap and Co., Ltd., Lou:don, is a through passenger to Saa Francisco by the Makura. Mr. Beaumont Smith, managing director of the J. C. Williamson - Picture Corporation, returned by the Makura today after a business visit.to Australia. Mr. F. J. Nathan, chairman of the New Zealand board of Joseph Nathan and Co., Ltd., who has been on a business trip to Australia, returned today by the Makura. Mr. Walter Hallam, who Las. been appointed secretary of the North Island | Motor Insurance Company at Welling- ■ ton, was farewelled last week at Wauganui, where ho was employed liy th» firm of Silk; Haworth, Ltd. ■ The death occurred at Palmerstoa North on Saturday morning of Mr* Frank Herbert Cookc, until recently • Crown Solicitor and for many years borough solicitor. The late Mr. Cooke, who, was in his. seventy-first year, was born, in Melbourne, but was educated: in Kent, and came to New Zealand in 1879. He was articled in the legal profession to Mr. Denniston (afterwards Mr. Justice Denniston) in tha firm of Stewart and Denniston, of Duuedin, and was admitted, as a barrister in 1884. In 1890 he joined Mr. Arthur Southey, who • had established- a business in Palmerston North in 1882. After the dissolution of the partnership he practised witlu Mr. Bruce Beal, and subsequently on his own account. Ha was appointed 'Crown Solicitor about ten years ago. Ho was an enthusiastic sportsman, and a prominent cricketer and tennis'player. He was als<* a past president of the Manawatu Club. The deceased is survived by his widow and two sons, Mr. P. B.
