BEISBANB, June 5. Australia defeated New Zealand in the first Soccer Test byi ( 4 goals to 2. The teams were:— Australia. —MeNabb, Evans, Parkes, O'Connor, Murray, Gibb, Crowhursty Cameron, Smith, Gorring, and Donaldson. New Zealand. —Zuill, Gerard, Graham, Stenhouse, Christie, Crabbe, Barton, Chapman, Kershaw, Groves, and Kay. Though beaten the New Zealanders were by no means o.utclassed. The weather was good, and 3000 people were present. The Soccer was of a high standard for the most part, though the kicking was faulty in the early stages. Purple patches included masterly goal-keeping by McNabb and Zuill. The former was cheered when he knelt, dived, and rolled with the ball in his arms, and cleared -from a desperate attack by Barton, Chapman, and Kershaw. The deadly New South Wales wings, Cameron and Crowhurst, had the New Zealand backs troubled, though Graham and Gerard were the best defence pair yet fielded. Kay was closely watched by O'Connor, so Barton and Chapman did most o:: tho attacking, showing to advantage in long, accurate shooting. Australia scored first, Smith accepting a flying pass from Crowhurst. The half-time score was: Australia 1, New Zealand nil. There was some thrilling football in the second half. Kershaw equalised, and then Smith and Cameron put Australia two ahead. Chapman then crowned a good movement with New Zealand's second goal. Zuill dived to clear a shot by Crowhurst, but the ball landed close to the goal-line, and Gorring made no mistake. The last four goals wei-e scored in six minutes. It was New Zealand's best showing yet. . Chapman on Saturday's form was considered by some critics to be a superior pivot to Christie, who, though reliable, is inclined" to be slow.
