HANDICAPPER'S OPINION

It is many years since three two-yeav-old fillies have been classed as superior to all the colts at the, end of a racing season in England, but it is so this time. Fov the Free Handicap, seven furlongs, which is to be run at Newmarket on 6th April, the Jockey Club handicapper, Mr. A. Fawcett, weighted 200 pi last season s two-year-olds, and of these six were allotted 9st or over. Myrobella, who heads the list with 9.7, is credited with being the most brilliant two-year-old filly that has' raced in England for several seasons, and has the same weight as was allotted Orwell and Mannamead in last year's Free Handicap. The handicapper must also regard Betty and Brown Betty as exceptional, seeing he has placed the former only 31b and the latter 41b from Myrobella. Manitoba, who is already being tipped as the winner of the nest Dcvby, heads the colts, but he is conceding only a pound to Hyperion and Jim Thomas. The last-named is not engaged in any of the classics. April the Fifth, who. won the Derby, was not eligible to be weighted for last year's Free Handicap, his three starts at two years not returning a place. The Derby second, Dastur, had 8.5, and Miracle, third in the classic, 8.13. Firdaussi (St. Leger winner), who was weighted at 9.0 for the' Free Handicap, was fifth in the Derby. The following are the first dozen in this year's Free Handicapl weights:— st lb Myrobella, to or .gr f, by Tetralema— . Dolabella 0 7 Betty, eh f, by Teddy—Miss Cavendish 9 4 Brown Betty, b or br t, by Friar Marcus —Carpal "9 3 Manitoba, b c, by Manna—Berystede . 9 1 Hyperion, eh c, by Gainsborough—Selene 9 0 Jim Thomas, br c. by Stratford—Honour Bright 9 0 Superylsor, b f, by Abbols Trace—Lady . Buzzer 8 12 Felicitation, b c, by ColoradOr-Eclicita . S 11 Scarlet Tiger, b c, by Colorado—Trilogy S 11 Versicle, bile f, by Sickle—Verdict 8 10 Coup de Lyon, eh c, by Winalot —Sundry 8 10 Colorow, eh c, by Colorado—Fieardel .. 8 10 • It may be noted that none of the three fillies at the head of the.list are in the Derby. Lord Lonsdale, the owner of Myrobolla, has no representative in this year's "Blue Riband" classic. The owners of Betty (Lord Astor) and Brown Betty (Mr. W. Woodward) have several en--0 trants, but. all of them are colts. None " o£ the fillies are in the Two Thousand or £ St. Leger either, but they are in the Oaks l * and One Thousand. l£ A point of interest is that horses weight--9 ed in the Free Handicap still have big. lt values. At the Newmarket Sales last ;e month two of them, Blue Boy (Gainsis borox.^h—Tetrarch Girl) and , Breaffy a- (Buchan —Polly Flinders), who were eac ;o rated at B.l'in the Free Handicap, changed ed hands at 3800gns and 310(tais respectively. Evidently ownerß in' England are is willing to bid high for anything with a chance in the classics.' <. .•. •"."-'■
