MR. H. L. TAPLEY, DUNEDIN

A Press Association message from Dunedin reports the death of Mr. Harold Livingstone- Tapley, C.M.G., at the age of 57-years. For some time Mr v Tapley had suffered from heart! trouble. - He was born at Semaphore, South Australia, hi 1875, and was educated in South Australia. He arrived in Dunedin in 1893, and established his business of shipping, stevedoring, and insurance, agents in 1900, representing the Oceanic and Oriental .. Navigation Company. From 1907 to 1911 he was a member of the Dunedin City Council, and from 1908 to 1911 was a member of the Otago Hospital and Charitable Aid.Board. He was a member of the Otago Harbour Board from 1913 to 1920, and was chairman of the board in 1919 and 1920. In 1921 has was again elected to the City Council, and two years later he was elected Mayor. In 1925 he received the compliment of being re-elected without opposition to the Mayoralty for a second term of two years. In 1923 Mr. Tapley was elected a member of the High Schools Board of Governors and of the Technical College, but he vacated these positions on his retirement from the Mayoralty. Mr. Tapley was one of tho originators of the New Zealand and South Seas Exhibition, and was a director of tho company and a vice-patron of the Exhibition. - He was president of ■ tho Overseas Club from 1921 till 1927. At the General Election in 1923 he defeated Mr. J. W. Munro for the Dunediji North seat by 53G3 votes to 5101, but was defeated by Mr. Munro at the next election. Ho was o, director, of Messrs. A. and T. Bint, and was a prominent volunteer- officer in his day The late Mr. Tapley had only returned from a visit to friends and relatives in Adelaide last week.
