DEATH OF A CHILD

The death took place at the;Masterton Hospital on Saturday, morning of Joan Noreen, the youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs; A. Bradbury; of Dalefield, near Garterton, as the result1 of extensive burns about the front of'the body, and severe, shock. -.":■■• The child, who was four years and eight months of age, was-left in bed with her'sister Grace, aged five years and nine months,- on Friday morning, while her parents were engaged milking. From an adjoining room Joan obtained some, matches, and,' it is assumed, ignited one; which" dropped on her flannelette nightdress,' setting it alight. v :•■■'■: ■•

Her not much older sister, with some presence of mind, got some- water arid extinguished the flame. The partlyburnt clothing was removed, and the child's mother, on returning to the house, found her sitting upon the bed with a blanket and a jacket around her. The burnt clothing was on the floor in the kitchen.

Medical aid was quickly obtained, and after first aid had been rendered the child was taken to the Masterton Hospital. She did not rally; .and died frDm shock, £ oJlqwing the severe burns.
