LORD ASTOR'S BAD LUCK

. It was recently cabled that Mannamead, one of the popular picks for the English Derby, had gone lame, and this is confirmed in late English papers. Mannamead, as well as Onvell, is trained by J. Lawson, and it. was-antici-pated that the stable would pull »ff a couple of this season's classics. So far as Mannamead is concerned, it is all off. He- pulled tip lame after doing a -canter at the end of February, and must haye been in a bad way. His trainer expressed doubt Whether it would be possible .to tvain the colt for .either' the Two Thousand Guineas (which comes- up for decision next Wednesday) or the Derby. Last season Mannamoad started three times and scored very easily in qach race. Ho is owned by Lord Astor, who seems fated not to win the Derby. In 1919 lie was. second with Buchan, in 1921 he wns second with Craig an Erari, in 1922 second with Tamar, and in 1024 second with St. Germans. In the New Derby Of 191S, run at Newmarket he was second with Blink. At the time of his break down Mannamead was secopd favourite for the Derby, at only a hilf-point longer than Orwell.'
