Mannamead, bracketed with his stablecompanion Orwell as the best juvenile in England last season, has:met with, a mishap in! training- which may keep him out of the classic contests this year. Mannamead, who belongs 'to Lord Astor, is joint topweight with Orv^ell for the Free Handicap. He was unbeaten on the racecourse, and improved at each outing.' He did not run,until September, when he was an easy winner of the Malton Plate at York. In his next race he was an odds-on chance for the Clearwell Stakes- at Newmarket, which: he won. in a canter by four lengths, and.in his other race, the Doncaster Autumn Foal Plate, he was also an odds-on chance, and won by three- lengths/.' -. .'' - .- - Lord Astor seems fated not to win the Epsom Derby,. His representatives have finished second oh four occasions. In. 1919 he was second with Buchan, in 1921-second with Craig an Eran, in 1922 second with' Tamar,^and in 1924 second with St. Germans.
