RESULTS OF THE POLL

SITTING MEMBERS RETURNED

The Maori elections, held yesterday, resulted in the return of the four Native members in the last Parliament —Sir Apira"sa Ngata (present Minister of Native Affairs), Mr. Tau Henare, Mr. T. Makitanara, and Mr. T. Te Tomo. All four were Coalition candidates. The issue was really decided between Coalition and Ratana candidates. Three of the four Maori representatives have been elected by substantial majorities. Mr. Henare, who in 1928 had a majority of 880 votes in a contest with six opponents, improved on his position by about 50 per cent, in a triangular contest. When Mr. Te Tomo was returned to the House at a by-election in October last year he obtained a majority of 802 in a three-cornered y oil; on this occasion, despite the presence of five opponents, he has secured a majority of more than 1400 votes over his strongest challenger, and a clear majority over all his rivals of about 600 votes. Sir Apirana Ngata secured an increase in his following, but his majority remains practically the same as before. This time he had a straightout fight, whereas three years ago he had two opponents. At the 1928 General Election Mr. Makitanara polled equally with one of the six other candidates, and only gained his seat in the House on the casting vote of the returning officer. At the present election, in which the total votes cast increased by about 100, he is returned with a majority of 20. Five out of the fourteen candidates in the Maori election forfeit their deposits of £10 each as a result of their failure to poll more than onefourth of the votes accorded the leading candidate. Four of the five were contestants in the Western Maori district. ' The returns in three of the electorates are incomplete, but the results cannot be affected by the outstanding votes.
