THE TETRARCH'S EQUAL?

"The best two-year-old seen out since The Tetrareh" is the eulogy bestowed by English critics on the Golden Hair colt (Gainsborough—Golden Hair), who won tho Champagne Stakes at Doncaster on Bth September. This race is customarily looked on as deciding the best two-year-old of the season, and, although Cockpcn, owing to going amiss, was unable to take his place in this year's field, it is now gcneially conceded that the Golden Hair colt is much tho better ot thu pair. The Golden Hair colt, who is owned by Mr. W. M. G. Singer and \vho will probably be known as Triton next year, has had a most successtul season, the ou!y timo ho has been beaten in his four starts being at his first appearance,, and even then he wah an odcl&-on favourite, Ho won the Champagne Stakes by four lengths fi om Mowgli (Asterus—La Belle Alliance), who had been an easy victor iat hia one previous start; and, according to the "Sporting Life," was not only never oft" the bit but was going so easily at the finish that his rider was able to pull him up a very short distance past the post. Commenting on the performance, one critic says: "The Golden Hair colt came out of his cldthes at Doncaster more muscular, stronger, and better looking Lhan he was at Sandown Park (where he won his second race). His hocks are not as straight, or as well turned, as one would wish, but he has a nice obliqiie shoulder and it! altogether a docile, sensible colt. We are paying him no false compliment when we state that he is a better horse than he- looks. We go bo far as to say that he is' the best two-year-old seen out since The Tetrareh. He stood at tho post in sensible fashion, and when the signal -was given' was instantly into hi stride. Many a high-priced and better looking yearling has made more than the 3000gns he cost Mr, Washington Singer. We wish that the latter had been well enough to be present to see the splendid way in which his colt won the Champagne Stakes."
