Crowds gathered at vantage points on Epsom Downs 24 hours before the Derby was run. Included were numerous gipsy caravans, and the Downs presented a picturesque sight at nightfall. Those who slept out lighted camp fires, and swings, roundabouts, and side shows, were kept going all through the night. Their Majesties, who gave the usual dinner to the Jockey Club at Buckingham Palace—this year the night before tlio race becauso of the race day being on the King's Birthday—motored out at noon to Epsom and witnessed the Derby. The Prince of Wales, the Duke and Duchess of York, the Duke of Gloucester, Prince George, and Princess Mary were also present. The Royal party drove to Epsom in three cars from Buckingham Palace, and as the procession passed along, the course to tho grandstand, through a dense crowd a mile' long, tho reception given to the King was even more demonstrative than usual, for it was not only his first appearance at the Dsrby since his illness, but it was also his birthday. Many visitors flew over from France, Belgium, Holland, and Germany to see the race, and the attendance generally was enormous. Early in the day 27 starters were left in the Derby, but when saddling time came two were scratched. Cameronian continued to hold the position of favourite, with Pomme d'Api and Doctor Doolittle joint second favourites. Tho principal'race of tho day resulted as follows: — DEEBY STAKES, a sweepstake of 100 soys each, with 3000' soys added; about one mile and a half. J. A. Camoronian wag ridden by J\ Fox, the oldest jockey iv the race, and was trained by F. Darling. The last time a favourite won the Derby was.in 1927, when Call Boy was the winner. Cameronian also won the 2000 Guineas Kaee last month. Tho weather was brilliant, and the going firm.. Cameronian, Estato Duty, and Orpon were prominent at tho start, but dropped back to let Grindloton' and Gallini go ahead at the half-mile. Gallini magnificently led down the hill and round Tattenham Corner, where Camcroniau caino out and secured the lead. Orpen dashed away from tho ruck, and challenged Camoronian, a terrific struggle ensuing, with the horses neck and neck down the straight, but Cameronian staved off the sustained challenge. Goyescas was fourth, and Jaoopo, Pommo d'Api, and Gallini almost dead-heated for fifth place.
