Tlio death has occurred at Christchurch of Mr. Harman P. Fineniore, aged 87 years, a well-known merchant (states a Press Association message). Mr. E. D. Andrews, the well-known tennis player, who is about to leave for England, is receiving a presentation from Palmerston North residents this afternoon.

Major H. Gray, D.5.0., M.P., arrived this morning by the Tamaroa from England. Ho is. booked through to Auckland. Major Gray was at one time A.D.C. to the late Lord Kitchener.

Tho death occurred at the Palmerston North Hospital on Saturday of Mr. Frederick Ebbett, a well-known resident of the Woodville and Foxton districts. Prior to taking up his residence in Foxton some fivo years ago, ha was dairy factory manager at Burnside, Wanganui.

The funeral of the late Private John Murdoch M'Lean, 29539, N.Z.E.F., took place at Karori to-day, and was largely attended by the staff and patients of the Mowai Homo. The service was conducted by the Eev. James Baird. Amongst those present were Miss M'Bae (matron), Captain S. Galtoway, and Mr J. Burnett, of the Bed Cross Society Mr. E. P. Norman (Town Clerk), Sir John Luke, M.P., Captain S. H. Crump (representing G.0.C.), Major Watson (8.5.A.), Mrs. Neilson (Women's National Beservo), arid Mr. H. G. Lockett ("War Pensions Department).

An arrival by the Tamaroa this morning was Mr. John Ycates, a graduate of Victoria University College, who has recently taken his degree of Doctor of Philosophy at Cambridge. Mr. Yeates held an M.Sc. degree before he left for the Old Country, and was also the first to win the Ph.D. degree of New Zealand. He gained a post graduate scholarship in science, awarded by the University of New Zealand, and while at Cambridge did research work, for which he was highly praised, and on which he gained the Cambridge degree of Doctor of Philosophy.

The Bristol Piano Company has received advice by cable of the death oa 17th July at Maine, U.S.A., of' M" Frederick T. Steinway, president of the world-famous firm of piano manufacturers, Stoinway and Sons. The matter is of interest to the musical public, because the long history of the company embraces four generations of the Steinway family. The founder was Mr. Henry E. Steinway, who was born in February, 1797, and had four sons and one daughter. The deceased president was a direct descendant through Charles Steinway, the third son of the founder.
