V.M.C.A. TOO GOOD,

Those who expected to see Marist take their place in the local final of the Chatham Cup competition were disappointed at the Basin Reserve on Saturday. V.M.C.A. secured a good win by two goals to nil, after a game that lacked sparkle and in which wild kicking took the place of science. In the first half an hour, at least, Marist had the advantage, but the V.M.C.A. defence proved sound enough to keep them out of the danger zone. Gradually V.M.C.A. took the upper-hand, aud at the beginning of the second spell it was apparent that the chances were with them. V.M.C.A. played better* football generally, and as a result of good work by Stark on the left wing Wilkins, who was making his first appearance in the centre forward position, was able to place a couple of goals to his credit. Marist fought hard to overcome the hurdle, but there was no further scoring, and the game ended: V.M.C.A., 2; Marist, 0. Jlr. E. Ormrod was referee.
