FRANK BULLOCK RETIRING

A FAMOUS ANGLO-AUSTRALIAN JOCKEY. :

Mr. Frank Bullock, the famous \Australian jockey, who is retiring definitely from the saddle, and who left for Australia by the Maloja on 18th December, was interviewed by a representative of the "British Australian. and New Zemlander' prior to his departure. "It. is terrible," he said, "that at the age of 40, when I should be. in my prime, I feel old. But I have been badly shaken by five bad falls during,the last few years, and have lost my nerve. I have no plans for the future except a complete rest until I am a brand new man again. Then I will probably return to England as a trainer. I am quite broken-hearted at leaving'the saddle after twenty years, and am sorry to leave the world's best people. I have been always treated royally here. "When; a jockey has become established h» earns more in. England: than in Australia, , because there are ' more wealthy owners here than' there. Though he_ is officially entitled to only £5 for winning the Derby or any other race, retaining fees and presents make the remuneration very much higher. ' "No, I will never ride again in Australia. I have no nerve to face courses whose sharp turns and short 'straights necessitate rougher riding than English courses. Australia would do well to adopt the English long straights, for in Australia the early scramble for a place often overtaxes the horse's energy in the first few yards. Hers, however, horses are enabled to lie behind, get quietly into their stride, and finish strongly. The riding is therefore fairer, and the best hong generally wins. '

"Donoghue is the best jockey the world has ever seen. Whether he rides a sluggish horee or a two-year-old,, whether lit is a sprint or a long race, it is all - the same to him, bat I disagree with those who say that his ability is miraculous. His successes are due to his great judgment in picking the best mount. Donoghne can to-day choose practically any horse in the Derby. The best horses that I ever rode are Saucy Sue and Picaroon. They were wonderful. . * \

"I have received many magnificent presents and souvenirs during' the last weeks. Lord and Lady Actor gave me their autographed portraits in silver frames,, on which are engraved the names .of the twenty-three winners I,rode for them. My colleagues grave me a golden cigarette box on which the autographs of forty jockeys are engraved."
