THE INQUEST

AUCKLAND, This Day. The Coroner, Mr. P. K. Hunt, 8.M., held an inquest this morning into the death of Contable Begg, who was killed in the Parnell tunnel yesterday while engaged iiTthe search for the escaped prisoner. Sergeant Angland said' that ■when five men of the search party entered the tunnel it was quite clear that there were two sets of rails., :Whcn, the party was about two-thirds of the •way through, a train : from the city entered on the left-hand rails, and. while this train was passing the men, another train entored from, the Newmarket end. Witness shouted a warning to the; others, and Jay flat on his stomach in the water channel till the train passed. It was then found that one of the trains had knocked down Constable Begg,' who was severely injured and unconscious, and was taken to the hospital, where he died. Constable Hook said ho saw Constable Begg standing, and called him ft stand back. Witness jumped close to the wall, and the deceased was thrown against him-by the engine. ■ The Coroner returned a verdict of accidental death while in the execution of duty. ',; :.
