DERBY WON BY PAPYRUS

The following is the result of the DERBY STAKES, of 30CO soys; about one mile and a half (for three-year-olds) :— Mr. B. Irish's Papyrus, by Tracery-— Miss' Matty, 9.0 ....'. '..... 1 Lord Derby's Pharos, by Phalaris— Scapa Flow, 9.0 ...' 2 Mr. M. Goculda's Parth, by Polymelus—Willia, 9.0 '. "... 3 Papyrus was ridden by Donoghue; Pharos, better backed than the winner, by Gardner; and Parth by Walker. Town Guard, who was favourite, finished thirteenth in a field of 19. The race was run in 2min 38sec. Over a quarter of a million people witnessed the Derby. The Prince of Wales had a great ovation. The weather was showery. For the- first time in the history of the race the event was won by a tenantfarmer named Irish, who purchased Papyrus as a yearling in 1921 for 3500 guineas. Donoghuo has now accomplished the unparalleled feat of winning three consecutive Derbies, making five to his credit since 1916. Walker, who rode Parth, is the Australian jockey. Town Guard was never prominent. From the entrance to the straight the race resolved itself into a desperate and prolonged duel between Papyrus and Pharos. The latter headed Papyrus below the entrance, but the effort exhausted him, and Papyrus slowly forged ahead and won by a length. Parth was a length and a half away.

Papyrus started in the Two Thousand Guineas, run at Newmarket on 2nd May, and ran fourth to Elian Gowan, Knockando, and D'Orsay, in that order. As a' two-year-old last season, Papyrus started eight times, and was successful on six occasions.

Pharos, out of nino starts last season, was successful in catching the judge's eye on six occasion?, was twice second, and ou.^v on one occasion finished out of a place—as a result of swerving in the straight. Perth started seven times, and was twice placed at' the head of the field.
