REFORM CANDIDATE STARTS

AUCKLAND, This Day. The Tauranga by-election campaign was, opened last, night, when Mr. C. E. MacMillan, the Reform candidate, delivered a speech at Katikati, in the north-western portion of the electorate. There was a large attendance, and the candidate was greeted with great enthusiasm. No questions were asked, and a motion of thanks and confidence waß carried amid loud applause. Mr. MacMillan, after paying a striking tribute to the late Sir William Herries, outlined the policy of the Government.
Mr. T. Lochhead, who was approached by members of the executive of the Farmers' Union and local branch of the Farmers' Union, stated in Tauranga yesterday that he would contest the Tauranga seat if he is accorded the support of the Farmers' Union branches throughout the electorate.
A Labour candidate has not yet been announced, and Sir Joseph Ward has not made his promised statement as to whether he will stand or not.
