MR. WILLIAM LINGARD
Mr. William" Lingard, N.Z.0., a wellknow.n citizen r>i. Wellington, passed away yesterday at his residence, "El Hido," Wesley-road, aged 76 years. The late Mr. Lingard was bom at County Clare, Ireland. His father (Captain Lingard) fought under tho Duk» of Wellington at Waterloo. William Lingard entered a military school,' biit owing to an accident had to discontinue his military training. After studying under his "cousin,- '.'tlie well known. Professor Blackie, of Edinburgh, young Lingard sailed for New Zealand, arriving hero in the,year 1865. Although a mere lad at the time, he immediately joined the colonial forces a-nd took part in tlie Maori war. During that campaign he rescued a comrade under exceptionally dangerous circumstances,- and for his bravery was awarded the New Zealand Cross. Mr. Lingard, spent the earlier part of his life at Wanganni. He then removed to Welluifrton, where for many years he was district manager ■ for the National Mutual Life Association. Contemplating a prolonged visit to the Old Country, he severed his connection with the Insurance Company, and on his return to New Zealand 'started an office of his own in Grey-streSt. AWit eighteen months ago he was compelled, through ill health, to retire into private life. The Jate Mr. Lingard leaves a widow, and .two daughters—Mrs. Fancourt and Mrs. Leonard Taylor—to mourn their loss. A funeral service will be held at St. Paul's Pro-Cathedral to-morrow morning at 9 o'clock. . ■
