Tne town appeared to be alive with motor care, and little groups of anxious friends of both candidates could be ecen, about, ibo principal booths about 11 o'clock discuffiing the chsjiceu. The Fisher party wae nervous in the early hours, but later in the day, on comparing notee, th<\y gauged thaw tne outlook was move hopeful. Mr. Fletcher, on the other hand knew that ho wa« not polling his full strength towaida evening. Still the prospect wan uncertain, and in that spirit the booths closed. The first return came to hand at 7.8 p.m., and it cheered Mr. Fisher'o friends quite a. lot. The light seemed to bo going their way. At the Druide 1 Hall Mi\ Flol-char polled splendidly, beating hi» opponent by 865 to 679. *At the Alexandra Hall, however, Mr. Fieher scored a big lead, and that practically stood to him till the last.
