Since the election of Mr. Taft as President of America no fewer than six deaths by violence, due to inflamed party passions, have taken place. The latest and most dramatic of these took place recently at Nashville, Tennessee, when Senator Carmack, the editor of the Nashville Tennessean, was shot and killed in the street by Robin Cooper, the fon of Colonel Cooper, the' Senator's political rival. According to a correspondent, a lady who was walking with Mr. Carmack about the time of the shooting | stated that Cooper accused him ol "hiding behind a woman,"' ami that when the Senator stopped away from her the tiring followed. * Mr. Carmack was going noith, and Colonel Cooper and his son were approaching. Soon aiier they came in sight of one another tha snootimt began. Robin Cooper lirod three shots and Mr. Carmack one. Colonel Cooper drew a pistol, but did not (ire. Mr. Carmack fell to the ground, dying instantly. Robin Cooper, a Inwyer, aged 26, unmarried, was shot in ili9 right shoulder, but was not f-cvrrcly hurt. The trouble began at the '' recenfc Democratic gubernatorial piinjp.rv," in which Senator Carmack was defeated. The Senator hotly resented his defeat, and ever since had lo*t no opportunity of attacking Colonel Cooper. The tragedy has recalled a story of how Colonel Cooper, twenty- five years ago, mtul" Mr. Carmack editor of the Nashville American, after he had won that paper in a poker game. Mr. Carmack at th.-t time had a considerable reputation as a newspaper writer. Young Cooper has been arrested, but the general opinion ~is that he will suffer little or no punishment for his deed.
