SWIMMING.

CH AMPIONHJ HP CAR X I VAL. Tho championship carnival under the auspices of the Wellington Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Af*ooiation was held «t the Thorndon Bathui on Saturday, under tho moht unfavoural)lo weather conditions jwsmljlc. A blustering northerly wind knockod up a big hpa inside tho baths, mid in tho early part of the afternoon before tho wind com-* inenced to die away, spray was blown in clouds across the enclosure, mid made things uncomfortable for tho few spectators und alho for competitors. The swimmers looked anything but happy as j they huddled together in groups on thu starting stage. Tho principal attractions at tho sports were the 100 yds and 440 yds Provincial Championship event*, and tho Schoolboys' Championships. Both of the Provincial Championships were carried off by B. C. Freyberg, lust year's schoolboy champion. In tho 100 yds thero wero five competitors, and they got off tho mark together. Noven and Savou turned first ut tho 50yds, with B. C. Freyberg in attendance. A good struggle homo saw Freyberg put in a brilliant finish, which landed him the winner, Keven coming second and IFegglun third. Savou gave up a few yards from the tape, when he was holding a. good position. Three cheers wore given for tho winner. Only two men started in the 440 yds — B. C. Freyberg and F, Wilton. Tho former soon put a stretch of water between liimsolf and Wilton, and thi.s gradually widened as tho laps were thrown behind. Freyberg eventually won by about 40yds. Had lho winner had nny one to extend him ho would have put up better time than lie did, and would doubtless have reached the New Zealand standard figures, notwithstanding tho lumpy water. Tho boys' championships fuini.shed some interesting races. These were open to boys attending primary and secondary schools in the Wellington district, the age limit being 15 years. The distances swum were 25, 50, 75, and, 100 yards, and the trophy for the winner is a gold medal, and for second place a silver medal. Tho total points secured by tho three first boys wero as follows: — If. Prico 8, Baumgart 8, R. Nelson 5. Price mid ljunmgart thus tie for the championship, and they will swim off over 50ydn mid lOOvdts' i courses on Wednesday evening. Both lads ! aro to bo congratulated, on their fine performances. Tlio final for tho 100 yds interclub handicap will probably bo re-swum tho same evening. This event was won by D. Noven, with Evonson second, but j tho race wo» cancelled, as the starter sent tho winner nway before his time. The final for the 50yds inter-club handicap furnished an exciting finish; all eight competitors being in a row when 10yds off the finishing rope. At this point C. Freyberg and M'Carlhy shot out from the ruck, and a closo race resulted in a win for Freyberg. The 200ydB inter-club I handicap ended, in a win for H. C. Blick, ' who just defeated 0- Freyberg by a touch. C. Mooro again carried off tho diving competition. During' tho afternoon Mr. R. Gnrlick gave an exhibition of life-saving, Tho detailed results of tlio races aro as follows : — , 25yds Schools' Championsjiip. — First heat : Levy (Wellington College), 1 ; Croll (Wellington College), 2.
