A successful. raid on. a Chinese gambling., den in Haining-street was made by the polioe last ni^ht. > i Shortly after 9 o'clock a large body of detectives and constables, headed by Detectives M'Gr&th, Neill, Broberg, and Nixon, rushed down the street, and entered a house occupied by Aii Bing. In a room about 10ft square were found about twenty Celestials standing, and sitting round a table, on "which, was spread the apparatus for playing fan- tan, together with, a. quantity of coins. A scene of great confusion ensued', and some wild attempts to escape were made, but as the police blocked the doorway the inmates soon found that they had to accept the inevitable, and 1 accordingly submitted. Among those captured was Sing Kee, the fan-tan banker, who had in 'his pocket-book about £16 in notes and 1 gold, and an order on one of the city banks for £800. Fifteen men were arrested in the> room, and were marched off to the Mount Cook Police Station. In another room fourteen Chinese were discovered either playing or looking on nb a game with dice, and they also' were taken to the police station. In the dice room— Wong Doon, Otaki ; Foong Wah, Adelaide-road, Shak Pok, Lambton-quay ; Wong Tong, Molesworth-street ; Kay Yah, LambtonquAy; Pye Gee, Greytown ; Weag Nee, Adelaide-road ; Fah Chu, Haining-street ; Hung Lee, Haining-street; Kum Ching, MoLe*worth-street ; Chic Hung, Majori-banks-street ; Wun Hung, Lambton-quay ; Wong Way, Cuba-street; Ah Joe, Hain-ing-street. * ACCUSED BEFORE THE COURT. The accused appeared at the Magistrate's Court this morning, before Mr. W. R. Haselden, S.M. Ah Bing was charged with being the keeper of- a common gaming house, and the others with being found on the premises. v Mr. Dalziell said he appeared for some of the Chinese, and asked for a remand. Mr. Wilford, who appeared for the remainder, • agreed to this, and his Worship remanded the case until Wednesday. The bail was fixed at £100 for Ah Bing and £(5 for each of the others. The surety of two Chinese merchants, Yee-Chong and Sing Kee, was accepted.
