DEATH OF MR. GEORGE BUCKLEY.

News has been received of the death at Brighton, near Melbourne, wtiero he has retided tor some years, of the Hon. George Buckley. Mr. Buckley wai lor some timo partner in tho looal Christchnroh branch of Dalgety and Co., then known as Ualgery, Buckley, and Co., previous to the absorption of tho various branches by the limited liability oompany. He occupied a seat in the Upper House for many years. Some eight years ago he cann into great public prominence in connection with the affairs of the Bank of New Zealand. He was one of the Committee of Investigation set np in 1?88, whioh included Mr. Justice Gilliea, Captain Colboek, and the Hon. Walter Johnston. After the commitreo had roported, Mr. Buckley was appointed President of the Bank, retaining that office till tho latter half of 1889 , when he denounced various arrangements in connection with the Bank, hia published revolutions concerning which created a sensation at tho time, though recent events have proved them to have been only too well foundod. 110 subsequently left the oolony. He has been ailing for some time. Deceased leaves a widow, three sons and three daughters, one of the latter being tho wife of Mr. Gee, manager of the National Bank at Wellington.
