Writing of the match, Hawke's Bay vt. Hawera, the Hawera Star says:—" Th*, Hawera batting was lamentably weak. No v " doubt they had the worst of the luck ; tho heavy state of tho ground was in favor of the bowlers, especially of Smith, who got I an extraordinary amount of ' work ' ou to the ball, breaking badly both from tbo off and from leg, but it cannot be gainsaid that the Hawera men were utterly wanting the, necessary form and confidence to fight , really good bowling. - They could make no I stand whatever. The first innings closed for 35, involving tho follow-on, and the second attempt was an even moro sad and sorry affair than the first, 29 being the total. Snith was to them practically unplayable, and he got a splendid average in eaci' innings. Tho uround did not seem to suit Wolstenholme so well as the hard, fast grounds of Napier and Farndon, though his average is good enough The match was over by lunch time, Hawke's Bay winning in one innings, with 64 runs to sparo. The. Hawke's Bay fielding generally was admired, though it was marred by not a few mistakes."
