DEATH OF MR. F. W. MERRIMAN.

We regret to have to record that Mr. Frederick "Wind Morriman died at his homo ab Paraell ab ten o'clock yesterday morning, at tho ago oE forty-sovon. Although tho event caused a deep feeling of sonow throughout tho city when it became known, it could not have taken any ono by surprise, for' it was well kuowuthat Mr. Merriman's illness was of such anatnro as almost to preclude any expectation of his 1 coo very. This lingering and hopeless illness ha bore with great patienco from its commencement about four months ago till its fatal termination yesterday. No one was better known or moic highly esteemed among the older colonists of Auckland than Mr. Meuiman. His gi eat abilities as a lawyer caused him to bo selected to dischaigo some of the most onerous duties in connection with his profession, while tho frankness and honoaty of his nature endeared him to all who ! enjoyed the privileges of his acquaintance. Mr. Merriman, who was born in "Wiltshiie, and educated at \\ inchester, came to Auckland in !Si4, dining Governor Fitzroy's administtation, when he commenced practice as a solicitor. In 1554 he was returned iis member of tho House of Representatives for thesubuibs of Auckland, and was elected Chtirinan of Committee 1 !, the duties of winch office ho dischaiged till 1536, when ho was succeeded by Mr. Caileton. Fiom ISSG till ISGI, he was Piovincial Law Officer, and fciuce that time he has filled the oflice of Crown Solicitor. For several years he was aUo a member of the Pioviuci.vl Council. ilr. Monimau nrnried Mis. Atkyns, tho widow of Cap tain Atkyns, and leaves a family. The funeral will take place to-day at tlnee o'clock, and the jjroceasion will start fiom the lesidenco of tho deceased, at Paincll, and proceed to the Cemetery at Symouds street. Ihe membeis of the Auckland Masonic lodges will be present, as, no doubt, will be a largo number of tho citizens who have been on terms of fiiendship witli the deceased.
