SUPERINTENDENCY ELECTION. DECLARATION OF THE POLL.

Yfstlrimy, at ten o'clock am., tbo Returning Officer, Mr Sheriff O'Biicn, officially declared the st.ite of the poll taken on the 26th ultimo. The attendance was not Luge, but a considerable sprinkling of 1 expectable electors was piesent.

He said : I therefore declare Robert Graham, Esq., to be diily elected Superintendent of the Province of Auckland. This announcement was received with loiul cheers. Mr. Eobert GnAiiAM said he took this public opportunity of returning his sincere thanks to those ■who voted for him at the lato election, and more particularly to those who exerted themselves on that occasion. He trusted they would take his remarks from the hustings as a sufficient acknowledgement for what they had done ; and to those who had voted against him, although lie did not thank them, he would say that he would place them on precisely the same footing as those Avho had voted for him. (Applause ) He would make no distinction of parties He would not be a paity Superintendent ; he would be Superintendent of the Province of Auckland, and as such would do his duty by all parts of the province, irrespective of party or individuals. (Hear.) He had no doubt they were anxious to know his policy, and how he would carry it out ; and he would tell them iv a few words : his policy was — honesty. That wns his policy; and he intended to carry it out with common Bense. He was not going to try trickery, but he was determined by exercising common sense and honesty, to guide the province as its executive head. (Hear.) He trusted that by continuous efforts in that direction, he would be enabled to do his duty in a satisfactory manner, to all. At that moment he was free from pledges to any party, and to any individual ; and when he called the Executive together he would be able to tell them that he was not bound to any party, nor to carry out any policy but a straightforward and honest policy. (Applause) Seeing that he was free from promises or obligations, he trusted that he would be able to carry out the duties of the Superintendeucy in a satisfactory manner, and that when his term of office has expired the electors would be satisfied with what he had done. Ho was aware he > was taking an office in which he was likely to receive a good deal of abuse ; but he wonld do his duty by the public faithfully notwithstanding. He was no coward, and was not afraid of what the newspapers

might say ; and he thought he was as likely to be supported by the Nao Zealander as by the Southern Cross, seeing that his sole object would be to do his duty ; but if it were not so, he would go on, fearless of attacks, como from whence they might. Mr. Graham concluded by again thanking the electors, and the proceedings terminated.
