The Race — After one slight faihue, occasioned by Old Calabar and Wai minster breaking away, the flag was lowered to an admirable btait. Exchequei, in company with Bonny Bieastknot and Lady Alice Hawthorn, was the first to show in advance, but after running a few strides Carisbioolc rushed to the front, and consideiably mci eased the pace, Exchequer going on second, Bonny BreastUnot next, with Lady Alice Hawthorn and the Claiißsa, colt lying up with them . then came Johnny Aimstrong, Buckhtone, Imperative, Hurricane, the Marquis, and "Wai minster, ho closely together that it was difficult to assign them places, the ruck being whipped in by the Stockwell colt. In this order they pioceeded up the hill, but on leappoaring in sight Lady Alico Hawthorn and Old Calabai weie »een in the iear, and at every stride diopped fuithev Mtern. Carisbrook still maintained his place, having Exchequer, Impeiatiico, and Aigonaut in olose Attendance, the four, as they passed the "Rifle Butts" being upwards of tlnee lengths in advance of Johnny Ai milrong. The Marquis, Buckstone, Waiminater, and the Clarissa colt, who came on in a body, the others, headed by Hurricane and the Stockwell colt, beginning to piesent a lengthened appearance. Passing the Red House, Cambiook began to exhibit ■ymptoms of defeat, and on making tho bend into the ■traight he, in company with Exchequer, dropped back, and the lead was immediately taken up by The Maiquis, who in a few strides after was joined by Buckatone, Johnny Aimstrong, the Clarissa colt, and Aigonaut being in close attendance. On reaching the distance, Johnny Armstiong was beaten, and the result was now left with the two favomites, who ran locked together to the stand, wlieie Buckstone appeared to have a ■hade the best of it, but Challoner, making a vigorous effort, w»a just enabled to land The Marquis, who lan the longest, the winner by a head. There v«ere three lengths between the second and third, and a head between the third and fourth, Johnny Armstiong was fifth, the .Stockwell colt sixth, Evchequer seventh, and Imperatrice next. Bonny Bieastknot, Old Calabar, and Lady Alice Hawthorn weie the last three, and did not pass tho post. Time, 3 minutes, 21 seconds. [It may be mentioned that the Marquis wns accompanied to the post by Harden, the lad who looks after him, but that the liwse was again as docile as a sheep. Thus was the St. Leger, so famous, for its surprises, at last carried off by one of the favomites, and one of the greatest turf problems solved that had ever peiplexed racing men It is said that Mr S. Hawke (the owner) backed his hoiae for .£1,500, and the piiucipal adherents of Whitewall laid good stakes. But, though a favouiito, no horse has encountered gieatei hostility of opinion than The Marquis. The present makes the sixth St. Leger that John Scott has won since 1851, with Newminster, West Austialian, Wailock, Imperieuse, Gamestei, and The Marquis — a, most extraordinary series of triumphs ; and it may be remarked, as a coincidence, that Clmllonei also lode Caller Ou, the winner last year; whilst tho wmnois of the last three successive St Legers, viz , St. Alans, £Jaller Ou, and The Maiquis, aio all by the celebiated sire Stockwell.]

Tim Whiffler alipped his horses immediately the flag was lowered, and came on with a long lead, Carisbrook lying second, Buckstone third, with Wallace and Zetland ne^t, aide by side, and the other two following some distance in their roar. No material ohange took place until they passed the "Rifle Butts," where Bullook indulged his home with a pull, which enabled his followers to get on better terms with him. On their fairly entering the straight Oarisbrook dropped back, and Zetland, in company with Bttckstone and Wallace, came on in attendance upon Tim Whiffler to the half-distance, whore Wallaco was disposed of, and Buokstone, coming with a rush, headed Zetland ; ho was not able, however, to reach Tim Whiffler, who won easily by a length ; Zetland was a bad third, and the pthers were beaten off.
