MOTOR ASSEMBLY FACTORY

New Works For Christchurch STAFF OF 125 TO BE EMPLOYED When a new motor-car assembly factory in Christchurch is in full operation, 125 men will be employed. The factory will cover one acre and a half of a six acres and a quarter block adjacent to the Christchurch-Lyttelton railway line. The factory, which is expected to be in production in four months, will be built by a privately-owned company, comprising David Crozier, Ltd., Messrs D. Clive Crozier (Christchurch), P. H. Vickery (Invercargill), and John Black (Dunedin), and the Boon Investment Company. The share capital is £IO,OOO. All Austin cars for the South Island will be assembled at the works, the plans for which have been_ prepared. Modern in its lay-out, the factory will be single storeyed and finished with stucco. In the crane bay, car cases will be stacked four high. Other departments are for painting, trimming, and assembly, while space for 60 cars ready for the road is provided in the plans. The factory will be located in a new “heavy industries” locality approved by the town planning committee of the City Council, whose final approval of the building plans has yet to be obtained. A section of the land is being reserved for the. future erection of workers’ dwellings and for a site for another factory. A siding from the railway will run into the crane bay, while access to a paved road will be given by a new road to be constructed bv the company alongside the railway. ’The nucleus of the staff is already obtainable in Christchurch, because David Crozier, Ltd., have been operating two small assembly plants for some years, and employment will be given to a number of new employees. The latest in changing, dining, and recreation rooms has been planned for the staff at the factory, which will be capable of expansion at a minimum of expense. Overtures were made that the factory should be built at Wellington. The claims of Christchurch as the site were too strong, however.
