SITE FOR HEALTH CAMP

♦ - OPTION OVER CITY PROPERTY AUTHORITY GIVEN BY MINISTER An option over a 23-roomed house standing in more than seven acres of land in St. Martins will shortly be obtained, on the authority of the Minister for Health, the Hon. P. Fraser. The proposal is that the property, which is called “Glenelg” and one of the best-known homes in the city, should be used as a permanent health camp. The Minister’s instructions were received on Thursday by Mr F. W. Furby, who is chairman of the local health camp organisation, who said that the property was considered ideal for such a purpose. Some 270 feet above sea level, the home is built to receive the full benefit of the sun. Its facilities include a swimming bath, a tennis court, and attractively laid out grounds. The permanent health camp will be financed from a proportion of the £176,000 which comprises the New Zealand national memorial to King George V, and it will be open all the year round. It will accommodate under-nourished children from Canterbury, South Canterbury, Nelson, Marlborough, and Westland districts, and it is hoped eventually to have accommodation for 100 inmates at' a time. When the full health scheme is in operation, it is proposed to have five permanent camps in the Dominion—three in the North Island and two in the South. The second southern camp will be in Otago. The new camps will be vastly different from the present summer camps, it is stated.
