RACING AND TROTTING

AT RICCARTON

CANTERBURY JOCKEY CLUB'S MEETING PROGRAMME FOR TO-MORROW The summer meeting of the Canterbury Jockey Club, to be held to-mor-row, is likely to attract a large assemblage of racegoers. The acceptances were very satisfactory, and include a strong contingent of visiting horses from southern centres. The course is carrying a thick sole of grass, and the going will be excellent with a tendency towards fast times. The win-and-place system will be in operation. The programme is as follows: — 1.2 p.n*.— HORNBY HURDLES HANDICAP, of £2OO One mile and three-quarters. st. lb. st. lb. The Surgeon 10 4 Top Rank .. 9 0 Superex .. 10 2 Grampian 9 0 Royal Flashlight ..9 0 Amphora 9 2 Pink Comet 9 0 The class engaged in the Hornby Brush Hurdles cannot be considered strong, as apart from the two topweights, it is confined to novices. On ; form The Surgeon and Superex should fight out the issue, with a preference for the former, who will have track Conditions to suit him. 1.37 p.m.— TRIAL. STAKES, of £2OO. Six furlongs, st. lb. st. lb. Chanteur ..8 5 Almira • - 5 2 Combat .* 8 5 Polistina .. 8 2 Ephod ..8 5 Gillie .. 8 0 Knight Nightcalm .. 8 0 Commander 8 5 Financiere .. 71l Liberate ..8 5 Flame Queen 711 Mutus ..8 5 Gold Trek .. 7 11 Oriental King 8 5 Love Affair 7 11 Papernilla .. S 5 MuVatto .. 7 11 Passenger ..8 5 Shooting Star 711 The Trial Stakes, for horses that Jiave not v«6n a race- to the value of £SO, has a very mixed field, and in consequence speculation will be well spread out. Several have shown recent promising track and race form, these including Combat, Mutus, Almira, Nightcalm, Financiere, Flame Queen Love Affair, and Mulatto, and the best of them may be Mulatto. Financiere, and Flame Queen fc!2 p.m— MIDDLE PARK PLATE, of £3OO. Six furlongs. O. R. Macdonald's b c Lazybones, by Nigger Minstrel—Slackline, 3yrs .. - , .90 H. D. Campbell's b f Haughty Toti, by Robespierre—Toti dal Monte, 2yrs> .. .. .. 6 13 The club is unfortunate in having an unusually small field for the Middle Rark Plate, and there is no doubt that Defaulter and Lazybones will account for the bulk of the speculation. On the other hand. Good Passage and Netherlea sprinted well yesterday, and with their light imposts both might be on hand at the finish. Indications however, point to Defaulter gaining further honours. 2.52 p-m. MIDSUMMER HANDICAP, of £4OO. One mile and a quarter. st. lb. st. lb. Davolo .. 9 0 Sovereign ZHctata .. S 13 Lady 7 6 Ponty ..8 5 Made Money 7 0 Waitaka .. 710 Double Gift 7 0 The numbers for the Midsummer Handicap are below those of recent years, but quality is Well represented, and it is difficult to suggest the final first choice. Davolo has been. working steadily but well, and Dictate has not shown any ill-effects from his two races at Trentham. Ponty has been off the scene for some time, and the 'public will be in the dark regarding his fdrm. "Waitaka is hardly up to this class, but Sovereign Lady has to -be seriously considered. Made Money ; created a sensation in his last appearance on the course, but has failed .since. Double Gift has been a fair hack, but does not appeal over a middle distance. The favourite selection may be Dictate and Sovereign "Lady. .3.12 p.m.— HALBWELL HANDICAP, Of £2OO. Nine , furlongs.. st. lb. «t.lb. Studley Royal, Balmenter, •nd Happy Night are likely to be well supported. 4.12 p.m.— LVTTELTON HANDICAP, of £2OO. Five furlongs, st. lb. st. lb. Dunstan showed useful form earlier, and Raeburn shaped very encouragingly at Oamaru and at Trentham. Kilrobe filled a minor place at Wingatui. . Prince Ruenalf, Scuffle, and the . Pucelle-Romarin bracket should add interest Raeburn will probably be a better favourite than Kilrobe and Dunstan. 4.*2 p.m.— CRAVEN PLATE, of £3OO. Seven furlongs, st. lb. st. lb. Paper Slipper 9 1 Wine Card ..7 3 Dictate .. 8 9 Metal Bird ..71 Top Row .. 8 5 Invoice .. 7 0 Grey Honour 7 9 Acceptable .. 7 0 Rebel Chief 7 8 Double Gift 7 0 Wino ..7 7 Swordstick ..7 0 The Craven Plate has attracted a high-class representation of open ; sprinters, including holiday winners in • Dictate, Top Row, Rebel Chief, Wino. ' Double Gift, Wirfe Card, and Metal ' Bird. In addition to these Swordstick has indicated a return to form by his track work, and Grey Honour raced fairly well at Trentham. Paper Slipper will be an interesting contestant, but f. as he has not raced for some weeks,- " he will toe at a disadvantage. The ■ public will probably show most conft-' dence in Top Row, Grey Honour, and Swordstick. . &3S p.m. — POST HANDICAP, of £2OO. Seven furlongs, at. lb. st. lb. More than half the horses in

the field art entitled to serious consideration, and many of the remainder are capable of effecting a surprise. The final summing up may be in favour of Glenogil, Nightdress, and Stratosphere.

FINAL GALLOPS

INTERESTING WORK AT RICCARTON Conditions were ideal for the final gallops at Riccarton yesterday, and a most interesting morning's work was carried out. Thr outside of the course proper provider' fast going, and the plough was alt > in use for some of the early gallopers. On the Plough Paper Slipper, joined t>y Wild Chase at the five-furlong post, ran sixfurlongs well in lmin 16 3-ssec, the second three in 33 2-ssec. The latter looks bright again, and has apparently thrown off the soreness which troubled him at Trentham. Lazybones and Mulatto finished together after running five furlongs in lmin 4 4-ssec, and Great Memory and Great Bramble did an easy seven-fur-long task in lmin 37scc. Defaulter and Yale were companions in a working gallop over six furlongs in lmin 19 4-ssec. Sovereign Lady and Rousseau raced abreast throughout a mile in lmin 47 2-ssec. Contract easily beat Oriental King over half a mile in 53sec. On the Grass Guinea Fowl galloped seven furlongs in lmin 30 l-ssec. and the Chokcborc tv/o-year-old Scuffle ran half a mile along the back stretch in 52sec. A Smart Filly 'Financiere finished about four lengths in front of Owlsgleam at the end of five furlongs in lmin 2 3-ssec. the last four- in 50sec. The former has only to move off favourably to be prominent to-morrow. Flame Queen, a new inmate of S. Barr's stable, recorded similar figures, and other tasks over five furlongs were executed by Nightcalm in lmin 3 4-ssec and Nightdress and Liberate in lmin ssec t Fast Sprints The best half-mile sprint of the morning was credited to Raeburn and Kilrobe, who crossed the line abreast in 48 2-ssec. Later this time was eaualled by Density (Pink Coat— Denise), who had a slight advantage from Night Hawk (Nightmarch—Velocium) and Gold Trek (Nightmarch— Rainbow Gold). ' Glenogil was in front of Clubman at the end of half a mile in 48 3-ssec. This pair was accompanied by tho four-year-old grey gelding in D O'Connor's stable by Straightcourso from Yellowhammer, who shows marked promise. Love Affair ran half a mile in 50sec and Pucelle beat Romarin and Chanteur in 50 3-ssec. The Washdyke juveniles, Netherlea and Dunstan, recorded 49 2-ssec, and Good Passage, assisted by Gaoler, ran the same distance in 49 3-ssec. From Washdyke Stratosphere, Superex, and Bellerive covered six furlongs in lmin 18sec. and their stablemates, Top Row and Double Gift, were let off with easy work. . . . - Windward was always in front oi Nolana over six furlongs m lmin 18 sec, Dracula following in lmin 18 z-o S6C, Davolo and Rotokino galloped the same distance in lmin 21sec. Impressive Work Swordstick was a neck in front of Dictate, with Happy Night a length away, at the end of seven furlongs in ! lmin 29 3-ssec, the last four in 51sec. 1 Swordstick is in much more solid con- | dition since his spell, and should be useful later. ! Sparkle went over the same distance in lmin 31sec and Rabble outstayed Dividend in lmia 32sec, while Bright Prospect attracted attention by beating Drinkup in lmin 30 l-ssec. 1 Studley Royal, assisted for five furlongs by Ephod, galloped a mile in lmin 44sec, the first half in 50 3-ssec. Gas Mask and Top Rank ran a mile in lmin 47sec. The Jumpers Royal Amphora jumped four brush hurdles at fair pace. Tomcat (Nightmarch—Pink Terrace) also jumped four hurdles with Nocturnus as a mate. This was Nocturnus's first schooling since last August. Conception also went over four j hurdles.

A Poor Race Cletrac, the favourite for the hurdle race, ran a poor race and finished last of the four runners. Bing Boy led all the way and finally won very comfortably. Even Money made a vain effort to reach him over the last half, but never looked likely. Cletrac was second to Bing Boy in most of the running, but a bad jump at the six furlongs finally settled his chance. He may have needed the race. At any rate it was well below his right form. The winner also hit one fence very hard, but it did not stop him. Sudan Wins In spite of getting chopped back at the start the two-year-old filly Sudan, subsequently favoured by a lucky run up on the rails, won the Juvenile Handicap rather well from Namara, who had begun smartly and led into the straight. Sudan was fortunate to get the run she did, but it is probable that had she got off well she would have won easily. Jean Quex was even more unfortunate at the start and did well to finish a creditable third, Cute Melody weakened to. fourth after having every chance. The. winner is a promising filly. Stretto Again Class prevailed in the success of Stretto in the Flying Handicap. Race Call made the .most of his light weight and carted Brunhild along in front from Great Hope and Stretto, the others tailing off. The pace was on and Stretto was being ridden to keep her place on the turn, but she was the only one of the leading bunch to run on. Brunhild and Great Hope felt the pinch entering the straight, and fell back but Stretto finishing solidly ran down the leader for a comfortable although all-out win. Notium finished well over the last bit to cut out Brunhild for third, followed by Great Hope, Clessamor, and Airing. Stretto naturally did not have much in reserve at the finish, but she I outclassed her opponents. Race Call ' adopted. .tactics calculated to break up I the field, and succeeded in all but the winner. Brunhild failed to justify her favouritism, • but was ridden out with the pacemakers and so did not finish on. A Surprise An outsider in Race Camp came from four or five places back to snatch victory on ttve post from Golden Orchid and. Fafnev in the Electric Hack Handicap The latter pair had been prominent in front with Slam, but Slam, who was favourite, stopped badly in the run home. Golden Orchid owed his place at the finish largely to the riding of B. rf. Morris. Silver Gift and Lexden, both badly served in the early running, finished on well. Sergia's Cup The Taranaki Cup was a false run race. To begin with, Onewhetu, Wildflower. and Red Sand all lost ground at the start and then Cheval de Volee ran to the front and the pace for six furlongs was only a canter, everything pulling hard. The horses that had been slow away were handy in a couple of furlongs, Onewhetu actually pulling his way up to second place, but as the pace increased with the approach of th» home turn, Scrgia went

to the front. She had no difficulty in running out the last furlong to win comfortably, while Cheval de Volee just stalled off Onewhetu for second. Wildflower was fourth, then came Lady Kyra. Sinking Fund got on the fence during the running and the jockey, H. Long, had to be assisted from the saddle. While-Ser-gia won well, the rate at which the race was run ruined the chances of Onewhetu and Wildflower, though the latter also appeared troubled by the distance. Lady Kyra ran a poor race. Okato Hack Naughty Marietta finished too strongly for Bonny Glow in the Okato Hack after the latter had displaced the pacemaker. Scarf Dance, entering the straight. The winner has improved lately and ran on -well. Bonny Glow had every chance. Ringside, who tailed the field to the turn and then moved up quickly, ran a creditable third. Philemup finished well back last. A Narrow Margin Relative won narrowly but well in the Taranaki Plate, and had her bracketed mate, Icing, been better served in the early running, it is likely they would have run first and second. As it was they paid a place price only a few shillings less than their straight-out dividend. Relative moved up very fast on the turn from four places back, and led into the straight where Ohanga challenged. There was a keen struggle between this pair. Relative just winning. Icing came from the rear for a fair third, with a big gap to the others, headed by Race Boy, Gold Gleam, and Sam's Choice. Gold Gleam showed a lot of early speed, but weakened at the finish. Student Prince was also prominent to the turn. Relative did not get a very good run, and her performance was correspondingly enhanced. Final to Favourite Winsome Lu, a strong favourite in the weak field for the concluding event, only just won after vigorous riding by H. Wiggins. The winner had to bridge a gap of four or five lengths on the pacemaker Lifeguard, and it was only in the last strides that she got her head in front. The others were outclassed. Lifeguard ran on better than he usually does, and gave the backers of the winner some very anxious moments. WEIGHTS FOR SECOND DAY (PRESS ASSOCIATION TILEGBAM.) NEW PLYMOUTH, February 3. Two high-class performers from the Wellington area are booked to appear at the Waikato meeting this month. They are Courtcraft and Cuddle, and their presence at the fixture should be a valuable attraction. Courtcraft has done well lately, and the intention was that he should contest the principal handicaps. Cuddle is moving freely in her work at Trentham, and may be a force to be reckoned with later in the autumn. After racing at Te Rapa, she may go on to Te Aroha.'and then compete at Trentham. If she comes through these meetings satisfactorily, her soundness will have been adequately tested, and if her form warrants the trip, she is likely then to go to Australia. PROMISING HACK % ROYAL VAALS LOOKS GOOD (By Carbine.; One of the most promising hacks in the Auckland province is Royal Vaals. winner of two races at the recent Takapun'a meeting. Royal Vaals is a nicely turned three-year-old filly by Vaals from Royal Doulton. She comes of a good line—the Winnie family—and is likely to make' her presence felt during the autumn, as she is improving steadily now. i Royal Vaals is speedy, and has done good' trials in private. In public she has given indications of oeing able to run on solidly.

DUNEDIN, February 3. The track and atmospheric conditions were ideal at Wingatui this morning for training operations, the outside of the course proper, with the trestles about 40ft out from the rails, being available for fast work, but most of the trainers preferred to use the plough track, which was fast. Gipsy Fair, who is engaged at Tapanui on Saturday, easily accounted for| Final Bell over half a mile in 52 3-ssec. Dollar Prince, now a member of A. E. Didham's team, took 55sec to run the same distance on the course. A Smart Sprinter

Alma was one of the early workers, but was let off with a couple of rounds' cantering. She looks well after her trip to Trentham and is the local favourite for the Publicans' Handicap. Delrain, who is a much-improved horse since racing at Christmas time, and Pink Robe ran seven furlongs in lmin 34sec, being picked up by Adina after going two furlongs, and the last five were run in 68 2-ssec. P. Powell will ride both Adina and Pink Robe at the Tapanui meeting. Master Anomaly was anxious to increase the pace all the way over a mile and a quarter on the course, which took 2min 33sec, the last halfmile in 58sec. This gelding is now staying on better in his work.

Sea Fox strode out well over seven furlongs on the plough and could have done better than lmin 35sec.

Lumiere was going better than Grand Finale at the end of seven furlongs in Imin 33 3-ssec, the last half in 54sec. The former is very cramped in her action when moving slowly. Song Boy. gave Gusto a lot of weight in a run over six furlongs on the course and beat him comfortably in lmin 21sec. Song Boy is to fulfil his engagement at Tapanui. Hanlon and Daring Deed were sent a mile on the plough, and the former was going the better at the finish in lmin 46sec, the last half-mile in 55sec. Night Wings and Pink Del took lmin 21 4-ssec for the last six of seven furlongs on the course, the last four occupying 55 3-ssec. Olliver, moving off from a standing start on the same track, ran six furlorgs in lmin 22sec, the last four in 55 4-ssec. Wyn was just beaten by Spanish Lad over six furlongs on the plough in lmin 21sec. This pair travelled very fast over the early stages, but took 56sec to run the last half-mile. Janet Gaynor was much too good for Quick Return in a sprint home over three furlongs on the plough in 45 2-ssec. A Cup Candidate High Glee has done well since racing at the holiday meetings and looks much more solid. He ran six furlongs on the plough in lmin 24 3-ssec, the last four in 54sec. High Glee will be ridden in the Dunedin Cup by J. Jen-

Both horses have done well recently, and if the h°/ m £ ns , up to h,s track reputation he should show up well in the Trial Stakes on Saturday. Out of Classic The withdrawal of Defaulter from the Champagne Stakes, to be run on the opening day of the Dunedin Cup n meting, leaves that classic much more open, and may mean that a larger field will now be paraded

TROTTING NOTES Full of Promise One of the most attractive young pacers produced at Hutt Park yesterday was Kilrea, a four-year-old filly by Jack Potts from Colene Pointer, dam of two high-class pacers in Kingcraft and Village Guy. She races in the same ownership, that of her breeaer, Mr B. Grice, and she will not disgrace her relationship. A solid race yesterday was suggestive o f better things to come. Not Encouraging Not many of the progeny of Frank Worthy nave shown stamina in a degree that is expected of good horses, and two failures in this respect at Hutt Park yesterday were Intrigue and Reception. Intrigue is out of a great stayer in Escapade, so the deficiency in his case must be attributed to the other side. A Big Task

Willow Wave was asked to step the first mile in 2min lOsec and the full journey in 4min 17sec to win the New Zealand Trotting Gold Cup, and in the circumstances he did well to finish as close as he did. He has had a strenuous season, and is wearing like a war horse. Well-deserved Win

Graham Direct's win in the Gold Cup at Wellington yesterday was well deserved, and the driver, F. G. Holmes gave the other reinsmen a lesson in the handling of a pacer. While King's Play and Bonny Azure were cutting at one another, Holmes allowed Graham Direct to keep within striking distance, and he had plenty in reserve when he elected to tackle King's Play The latter is a really good racehorse and a stayer of more than average ability. His next appearance will perhaps be at Addmgton at Easter, when he will make his presence felt against the best class horses. Loss of Form

King's Warrior at Hutt Park yesterday did not show the dash expected of him, and in a hard race he was fairly outstayed by Graham Direct and Kings Play. He will have to brighten up a lot if he is to have a chance at Addmgton.

On the Injured List ;' _,M Southern Chief received a sinK jury on the trip to WellinjiiiHß was not started yesterday. TURF GOSSIP

Reminders Acceptances for the first day of the Dunedin Jockey Club's meeting will close at 5 p.m. to-day. Nominations for the Westland meeting will close at 8.30 p.m. on Monday. Special Train from Dunedin' For the Dunedin Jockey Club's Cup meeting, a special train to convey horses and passengers will leave Wingatui at 7.50 a.m.. and Dunedin at 8.30 a.m. on Sunday, February 13, and arrive at Christchurch at 5 p.m. This train will take passengers for Palmerston, Oamaru. and stations north of Oamaru. and horses for Oamaru, Studholme. Washdyke. and Sockburn. Looks the Part

An interesting daily visitor to the Riccarton tracks is a two-year-old colt by Nightmarch from Gay Sonnet, owned by his breeder, Mr F. T. Buchanan, of Rolleston. He is of the solid type, and is a very free mover. Bred as he is, he should soon earn distinction. Well Again

Cuddle is reported to have made a complete recovery from the splint trouble which caused her enforced absence during the holiday racing period. She has been entered for the Waikato meeting, and after the Te Aroha and Wellington meetings which follow, the decision will be made regardina an Australian trip in the autumn. ':'":■ A New Role -j

Once a famous jockey and now a successful trainer, H. Gray will figure in a new role shortly as an owner. The Racing Calendar notifies the lease by Gray of the six-year-old gelding, Hill Billy, from the Auckland owner, Mr R. M. Taylor. Hill Billy is an upstanding bay gelding destined for steeplechasing. Rich Prizes

The ruling racing body in Germany believes in liberality in prize-money in classic races. The German Derby of 1939 carries 100.000 marks, equivalent to about £IO,OOO in New Zealand money. Of that amount £7OOO goes to the winner. The Brown Ribbon of Germany is another £IO,OOO race. It is to be run at Munich-Riem in July of this year. Southland Jumper Eastern Chief, winner over country at his first start at the Clifden meeting, is a member of W. E. Hazlett's team. An aged gelding by Chief Ruler—Violet 11, he is a quick and proficient jumper. Violet II is an imported mare who comes from the same family as Martian. Eastern Chief was a July foal, and as he ranked as a yearling on August 1, and as two years when actually 13 months old, he was useless for early racing. Racing at Winton

Nominations as follows have been received for the three principal events on the first day's programme of the forthcoming Winton Jockey Club's meeting:—

Winton Cup, of £200; one mile and a quarter—Hanlon, Ashaway, Galleon, Amelita, Ardchoille, Milford, Paladino. Delrain, Trivet, Grand Finale, Wyn. Flying Handicap, of £130; six furlongs—Janet Gaynor. Irish Birdcatcher. Moneyless, Viking, Rodeur. Beam. Roy Bun. , Winton Steeplechase, of £135; two miles and a half—Cock o' the North. Glen Boa. Kylemurc, Vitaphonc, Trirox. Sir Admiral, Polar Star, Hunting Go. Master Anomaly. Oliver. Scotsden. British Star, Black Banner, Royal Pal, Glenmure. Royston, Jollyanna, Pandure.

Liverpool Grand National Though Grand National winners in Kellsbro' Jack, Golden Miller, and Reynoldstown are still racing, they are not among the 79 entrants for this year's big jumping event at Aintree (England). There are many moderate horses engaged, and among the most outstanding are Airgead Sios, Royal Prince, Brendan's Cottage, Bondsman, and Royal Mail. Thirty entrants have reached double figures in age, the oldest being Don Bradman. Lazy Boots. Persian's Son, Pucka Belle, and Reineach being 12. It is expected that most of the horses will be near the minimum mark. The cost of starting is £IOO. American Candidate

America will have a good candidate for this year's Liverpool Grand National. , Battleship, a 10-vear-old horse by Man o' .War, has been showing excellent form, and not only is a good jumper, but possesses pace. At Hurst Park he won the Lonsdale Handicap Steeplechase, three miles * and 180 yards. Although he met a strong field he was a 7-2 favourite, and outstayed Belted Hero after getting over the la«t jump. Mrs Marion Scott, wife of Randal Scott, the film star, is Battleship a 1 owner. Battleship is a stallion and the last to win the Grand National was Grudon in 1901. Answer to Correspondent
