That is the romantic business for which Motor Assemblies (South ! Island) Ltd. was recently established in Ghristchurch. From this factory, one new DODGE car is being turned out every day ready for its work upon the roads. That in itself is an impressive indication of the industrial importance of this new business, but it is not until the story behind it is | known that its real importance can be appreciated. WORK FOB UNEMPLOYED MEN It is in its actual operation that this new industry shows its importance. While it is now producing one car every day its capacity is three cars daily; yet direct employment is given to 25 men, 14 of whom previously had no work at all. The number of employees will be increased later, and it is anticipated that as the business grows, the number of men employed by other industries affected by it will have to be increased also. A new company employing from 12 to 15 people has been formed to supply the upholstery and much additional work is being made for paint firms and woollen mills. Already Motor Assemblies (South Island) Ltd. has bought very large quantities of New Zealand cloth, paint and seat springs, etc.

MORE THAN 7000 PARTS DODGE cars now come to New Zealand in more than 7000 parts. That is, completely knocked down. When the parts are unpacked at the assembly plant, they are placed on a line and piece by piece welded together into one unit, to make the sleek, well-finished, all steel, safety bodies, which are one of the distinguishing marks of the Dodge car to-day. All bodies are insulated against dust, squeaks and rattles, and before any lacquer is applied the all steel body is insulated against rust, the most persistent enemy of metal.

There are | only three, indeed, in New f Zealand, the other two being I in Wellington. To produce f one car a day, the factory 1 works five days of nine hours 1 each, and working two shifts 1 with about 80 men it is thought 1 that it could turn out 30 cars I a week. The plant has been | installed to handle any make | of car, and it is possible that | it will later be used for other ill - makes as well as the DODGE. I^^^^^^^^^^^^^B

THE FINISHED PRODUCT Dodge on the Road— Car With Big Reputation That the DODGE car should be assembled in their own land should be a matter for great pride among the people of New Zealand generally and of Christchurch in particular. For the DODGE is a car whose performance and dependability have given it a very big reputation, and, more than holding its own among other cars in its class in appearance, it represents the handwork of a body of New Zealanders, many of whom were formerly unemployed.
