GREYMOUTH MERGER WITH COBDEN (SPECIAL TO THZ I'HSi.) GREYMOUTH, October 2. The merger of the Cobden town district with the borough of Greymouth took effect yesterday, and both the Cobden State and Convent Schools observed the occasion with a half-holi-day, after Mr A. H. Mi-Kane (chairman of the State School Committee and the last Town Board) and Mr F. H. Eggleton (School Committee member) had addressed the scholars at the schools. The flag was flown from the Greymouth Town Hall to mark the event. River Erosion The Brown river, on the Bell Hill road, is again causing i rouble to the Grey County Council. On Saturday ii cut a channel 60 feet wide by eight feet, deep in the Bell Hill road, the bridge, which cost £1440, being covered with debris from the Bell Hill Sluicing Company's claim. Golf The Dalgleish Shield match, played at Kaiata during the between teams representing the Greymouth and Westport Clubs resulted (Westport players are mentioned first)'. Monthly Returns Customs duties collected at Greymouth last month totalled £2246 8s Bd, and sales tax £1579 18s 2d. as compared with £1648 17s, and £1426 2s 9d respectively, during the corresponding month of last year. The total collections at Greymouth in September were £8966 18s 89, as compared with £7701 17s Id in September, 1933. Boxing Association Ball The Reefton Boxing Associations resuscitation ball, held in the gymnasium, attracted a large crowd of dancers. The music for the dancing was played by Hie Happiness Boys' orchestra and extras by Mrs Ecklunci and Mi:;s D. Leggoe. Mr Burn gave a tap dance, and Mr J. Hutchison sang a son:;. The executive of the Hokitika jubilee celebrations committee met business people and heads of sports bodies at the county chambers last evening. Mr W. Jeffries outlined the progress made, and stated that there were promises of a very successful jubilee gathering. The meeting then discussed arrangements for the festivities. MiMcGregor reported that the Runanga Pipe Band and the Hokitika Municipal Band would take part in the procession on December 27, and Kokatahi residents would revive an old diggers' band for the occasion. The order of the procession was arranged, and it was decided that the Arahura Maori party should lead it. Mr J. N. Robinson, on behalf of the Kanieri Electric Company, outlined proposed lighting arrangements, stating that the company was prepared to floodlight certain places in the town. The following committee was set up to arrange sports meetings for the afternoon of Thursday, December 27. and Friday, December 28:—Messrs F. McCabe, G. Adamson, jun., J. Turner, R. Ferguson, J. Davern, E. W. Heenan. J. L. Menzies, C. L. Harper, G. Adamson, sen., D. Breeze, J. Williams, Webb, and Tainui. It was decided to make further efforts to obtain private accommodation for visitors. Hotel bookings were already heavy, it being stated that one large hotel "was already practically booked up. Opening of Now Church The new Catholic Church of Our Lady of the Woods, Wataroa. was opened on Sunday afternoon by the Rt. Rev. Dr. M. J. Brodie, Catholic Bishop of Christchurch. There was a large attendance from all. parts of the district at the ceremony. Bishop Brodic was assisted by the Rev. Fathers Quinn (South Westland). O'Doherty (Akaroa. and formerly of South Westland), Healy (HokitikaL Joyce (Ross;, Holohan, McKeon, and the Very Rev. Father J. Long, administrator (Greymouth). Bishop Brodie, in an impressive address, paid tribute to the faith shown by the parishioners, who had so generously assisted the work of Father Quinn in the erection of the church. ■!■' ' ' 'i
