JOHN MCGLASHAN COLLEGE

♦ APPOINTMENT OF NEW PRINCIPAL MR R. G. C. M'XAB CHOSEN LTHE PKESS Special Service] DUNEDIN, June 20. The board of governors of the John McGlashan College has appointed Mr Robert George Colin McNab, M.A., to be principal of the college, as successor to Mr Colin M. Gilray, who is leaving Dunedin to take up the position of principal of Scotch College, Melbourne. The new principal was born in Auckland and was educated at the Auckland Grammar School and Auckland University College. At school he gained junior and senior Education Board scholarships, and he entered the university as the holder of a junior university scholarship. In a distinguished university career he became Senior University Scholar in English, gained the Auckland University College premiums in English and French and the Early English Text Society's prize, and took his M.A. degree with honours in English and French. Mr McNab's earlier teaching experience was at the Auckland Grammar School and the Christchurch Boys' High School. Since 1920 he has been a member of the staff of the Wanganui Collegiate School. In 1927 he was appointed housemaster of Hadfield House, the largest house in the school, and he is now senior housemaster as well as the first assistant of the school. Mr McNab has for some years been in charge of the English department of the school. Some years ago he re-established the College Dramatic Society, \vhich is now a very flourishing school institution, and he is also responsible for the editing and management of the school magazine. Mr McNab has played cricket and hockey for the Auckland University College, and on the outdoor side of the school life he has played a veryactive part as coach of the football and cricket teams, and as second in command of the cadet corps. The board of John McGlashan College regards itself as very fortunate indeed in having been able to appoint a principal so distinguished by his record and experience. Mr McNab will take over his new duties this year, at the beginning of the third term. Mr McNab is well known to readers of "The Press" as a special contributor and reviewer.
