OBITUARY.

MR DAVID T. STEWART. Tho death of Mr David Taylor Stewart at liis residence, "Birchbank," Orari, last week, removes from the district one of its mo3t highly respected residents. Mr Stewart Lad lived nearly all liis life in Orari, having gone there when only six months old, with his parents, from Pigeon Bay, Banks Peninsula, where he was born fifty-nine years ago. He received his education first at Winchester School and later at Orari School. He will always be remembered for his work in tho Frcsbyterian Church, as he was instrumental in having a church established at Orari. For many years ho attended the Geraldine Presbyterian Church, where he became a member of the Session. With tho opening of the charge in Orari some seventeen years ago, he was appointed the first Session Clerk, and his enthusiasm was a strong factor in the securing of a church building st Orari for the charge. This was secured by the Temuka church building being moved to Orari when Temuka obtained its new church. His activities were soon extended to Sunday School work, which he opened up in Orari, and for many years he was the Superintendent. In his early days Mr Stewart was a well-known footballer. As a forward he represented South Canterbury on several occasions. He first played for the Waihi Football Club in 1888, and soon gained representative honours, being n member of the South Island team which, in the early 'nineties played against a New South Wales side at Christchurch. At different times he was also connected with the Temuka and United Clubs. He married Miss Edith G. Bates, daughter of Mr T. Bates, Orari. lie is survived by his widow, and sons (Mr Douglas Stewart, Mr Gordon Stewart, and Master Colin Stewart), and by four grandchildren. JEWISH CENTENARIAN. Tli© death is announced of Mr Lewik Bauniberg, aged 105 years, who was said to be the oldest Jew in Australia. He was born at Warsaw, where he engaged in mercantile pursuits. He came to Australia at the ago of 65, and lias resided here since. His family is noted for longevity, his mother having died at the age of 115.
