OBITUARY.

MR NiMROD PAftKERi Mr Nimrod Parker, the well-known athlete, died on Sunday evening at the residence of his daughter, Mrs Sarin Watson, 12 Poverel street, Lower Riocarton. During his lifetime Mr Parker excelled at all kinds of spdrtff. He was 65 years of age at the time of his death. Mr Parker was born at Milton, Otago, in 1883. While a young man he attracted attention by his many successes at the old Caledonian sports m Dunedin, and by the time he was twenty years of age he Was recognised as one of the best all-round athletes in New Zealand. HKs capabilities were remarkable; he could put the shot 39 feet; he could cover 48 feet P inches in the hop. step, and jump; and at one contest, where a 561b weight had to be thrown over a horizontal bat. he broke all records by throwing the weight 14- feet 8 in'ches. Donald Dinnie, who won the world's championship in this sport, threw the weight only 14 feet 2 inches. Mr Parker used to keep himself in training by going for long-distance Walks, And at one time did the mile in omin 45sec. At the same period lie- was interested in wrestling. Latterly Mr Parker became, an athletic coach. He . coached the West Christchurch High School, the West Lyttelton School, and the Old Boys' Athletic Club for a number of years, and many wellknown athletes passed through hi* hands. There was W. JT. Simpson, Who won the one, two, and three-mile championships of Australia and New Zealand, and with a performance of 14min 49sec broke the three-mile record. Hector Burke, who beat Alfred Shrubb. the famous English runner, whose records have only recently been beaten by Nurmi, Waß another who received nis early tuition from Mr Parker. Mr Parker, .who un to a short period ago was a resident of Lyttelton, leaves three daughters and three eons. Two of the latter are well-known athletes, and J. H. Parker is renowned as an All Black.
