NEW CITY STREET.

WORK MAY BE COMMENCED IN JANUARY. Additional details of the project for a new thoroughfare joining Gloucester and Armagh streets are now available. It is proposed that the roadway should be 28 feet in width, with the footpaths each s,ix feet wide. The shops will each have a frontage of 14 feet 6 inches and a depth of 30 feet, with double fronts for each of those at the junction with Gloucester street. Every alternate shop will have the Spanish effect which will be the feature of the street. In the present plan provision is made for 40 shops altogether. If the City Council approves the subdivision and width of the roadway, operations will be commenced early in the new year. Mr W. Williamson has been engaged as contractor. The work of demolition will not be very great, involving as it does only the removal of the Colosseum and two shops at the Armagh street end, 'one occupied by a dentist and the other by a fishmonger. These are the subject of options which remove any difficulties in the way of demolition, and Mr A. F. Stacey, principal in the scheme, has made satisfactory arrangements for the exercise of purchase rights in connexion with the Colosseum. It is estimated that the subdivision and building operations will involve an expenditure running into six figures.
