MAORI SEATS.

THREE SITTING MEMBERS RETURNED.

MR H. W. URU DEFEATED

The election of the four Maori Parliamentary candidates was held yesterday. All the sitting members retained their seats in the North Island, but m the Southern electorate Mr H. \V. Uru (Reform) was defeated by MrTuiti Makitanara (Mac Donald) (United Party), and Mr Tirikatene (Ratana Party). _ For the northern seat Mr lau Henare (Reform) was returned for Eastern, Sir Apirara Ngata (United), and for Western Sir Pauj Pomare *°Hence the Maori seats are equally divided between Reform and the United Party.

SOUTHERN.

In the Southern Maori election, Mr H. W. Urn, sitting Reform member, lost his seat, and the telegraphic result gives the United member, Mr Tuiti Makitanara, the verdict by one vote over Mr E. Tirikatene 'Ratana Party). These two polled 198 and IJ< votes respectively. Mr Uru polled 160 came to hand at the Central booth, Christchurch, soon after the time of closing yesterday 4 o clock. All but one were in shortly after six o'clock, but the outstanding one from Croiselles (French Pass) did not come in till 8.15 o'clock. The position may be affected by a recount. , , In Christchurch the two leading candidates did not poll heavily, but at Tuahiwi Mr Tirikatene scored thirtythree and Mr Makitanara three. Mr Uru polled forty-three here. At Arowher.ua Makitanara scored twenty-two, Tirikar tene forty-two, and Uru twelve. At Pioton Makitanara scored the majority of the votes, while there was a fairly solid vote right through the Island for him. The votes for Tirikatene were cast more in groups. Mr Tuiti Mac Donald was standing in the interests of the United Party. He was born at Havelock in 1874 and educated at the Oanvastown School. In the years 1880-90 he represented Nelson. Westland and Marlborough at the Maori Council presided over bv the late Sir James Carroll. He took up farming 'in Marlborough and later moved to Levin. There he continued as a farmer and also as a Native land agent. In this latter capacity he has represented Maori interests in some of the most important land negotiations between Maori and pakeha. Mr Tirikatene, better known as Jim Tregnrtlia. is standing as a Ratannite. which is virtually as Independent. He is a native of Kaiapoi, being born there in 1896. He was educated at Kaiapoi District High School.-, After leaving sohonl he took on horse training. He went to the war in 1914 and on his return took up marine engineering Three years ago he went to the Ratana Pa at Wanganui, where he has been ever since.
