THE ELECTIONS.

PROBABLE CANDIDATE FOR RICCARTON. It is probable that Mr A. A. McLachlan, a young Christchurch solicitor, and a grandson of the late Mr John McLachlan, for many years M.Pfor Ashburton, will be a candidate for the Riccarton seat at the approaching General Elections. At present it is Mr McLachlan's intention to stand as a Liberal, but there is a possibility that the Liberals in Riccarton will link up with the United Party, in which case it is likely that Mr McLachlan will be selected as that Party's candidate. On the licensing question, Mr McLachlan says that he is a believer in the three-fifths majority, but he does not believe in the three-issue ballot paper.

LYTTELTON SEAT. A conference of representatives of the Reform Party from different parts of the Lyttelton electorate is to be held in Christchurch next week to consider the selection of a candidate to stand in the Reform interests for Lyttelton. LABOUR AND BAY OF PLfeNTY. (raxas assocutiox tiliqbak.) j GISBORNE, May 22. Though it is generally expected that Mr D. W. Coleman will represent Labour in the coming election for the Gisborne seat, the local Representation Committee, following tne ' formal course, is calling nominations from affiliated unions. The suggestion that Labour may select a candidate to challenge Mr K. S. Williams, Minister for Public Works, has aroused a mild interest, bjit the Representation Committee is not committed to this course as yet. Mr Lysnar has announced that he is again standing for Gisborne as an Independent.
