THE MAYORALTY.

LABOUR CANDIDATE TO STAND. SELECTION TO-MORROW NIGHT

Finality on the question of Labour contesting the Christebureh Mayoralty was reached by the Labour Representation Committee on Saturday night, when it was decided that a Labour candidate should be nominated. The selection of the candidate will be made tomorrow night. Saturday night's meeting of the L.IJ.C. was tiie most numerously attended gathering held for some time, and was presided over by Mr Robert Marfnrlanc. Practically tho iirst business was the disposal of a motion, notice of which was given at. the previous meeting, held ou the 14th inst, by Mr S. Fournier, the leader of the Christehureh Communist group, that the resolution arrived at by the meeting of tho 34th be rescinded. The resolution sought to be rescinded was that the L.R.C. should nominate a candidate for the City Mayoralty. This resolution was arrived at on the casting vote of the chairman. The motion to rescind this resolution was discussed at some length, and was ultimately defeated by a fairly large majority, and the resolution of the 14th stood.

It was decided to hold an open meeting of all members of affiliated organisations which arc financial to-morrow evening to discuss nominations and to select a candidate.

In addition to the Rev. J. K. Archer, who was nominated at tho meeting of the 14-th, there have bocn nominated for selection Mrs E. R. McCombs, Messrs If. T. Armstrong, M.P., and D. G. Sullivan, M.P. It is understood that Mr Sullivan will decline nomination in the event of the meeting selecting him. Mr Armstrong told a reporter on Saturday _ evening that he would indicate his attitude towards nomination at to-morrow night' 3 meeting.

MR BEANLAND AND CITIZENS' ASSOCIATION. TO THE BDITOK OTT "THE WUCSS."

Sir, —In your account of his meeting at Winton street, Mr Beanland is reported to have said, "He was induced to stand down, being assured by the deputation which waited upon him that he would be supported as tha Mayoral candidate in the coming election."

This statement is contrary to fact. The portion of the minute of tho deputation which deals with this matter reads as follows:—"Mr Beauland asked if the deputation would pledge tho Association to support him for the Mayoralty in two years' time. "Mr Machin, the spokesman of. the deputation, replied that no such pledge could be given, as the Association could not bo bound, but if Mr Bcanland would place himself in the hands of the Association, and acquiesce in its wishes on this occasion, it would place the Association under an obligation to Mr Beanlaud, which tho Executive of tho Association would surely feci that they must repay in one form or another in the future." At the following mooting that minute was confirmed in Mr Beauland's presence, and without questions from him as to its correctness. The deputation, therefore, clearly did not promise him support for tho Mayoralty. The Association has always considered Mr Beanland to bo lacking in qualities needed in the Mayor of a city of this size and importance. For that reason it has refused to support him for tho Mayoralty on three occasions. It believes Mr Beanland to bo a useful Bicmber of a Council or a Board.
