MAYORAL ELECTION.

MR BEANLAND'S CAMPAIGN.» Between 60 and 70 people assembled in the Winton street Hall, St. Albans, last evening in support of the candidature of Mr J. W. Beanland for the coming Mayoral election. Mr J. Gillanders presided. In a brief address, Mr Beanland reviewed the activities of tha Citizens' Association prior to the last municipal election, as a result of which, he stated, he was induced to "stand down," being assured by the deputation which waited upon him that he would be sup ported as the Mayoral candidate in the coming election. The Association had now asked him to staud down for a further term, but he felt that after his lengthy service to the city he had some claim on the citizens, and had definitely decided to contest the Mayoralty this year. The candidate then dealt briefly with some of the planks which would constitute his platform, concluding with the statement that he was not going to promise impossible things, but would be guided by his lengthy experience in public bodies' work, and do what he considered best in the interests of the citizens and of the city. He answered a number of questions en matters relating to the work of the present Council, stating that he would deal more fully with these when he addressed meetings of the ratepayers In the various suburbs.

At the conclusion of the meeting, ways and means of furthering the candidate's interests weie considered, and steps were taken to ensure on active campaign on his behalf.
