THE COMING CONTEST. MR J. A. FLESHER TO STAND. For the Mayoral contest next April three candidates aro in tho field—the present Mayor (Mr J. A. Flesher), Cr. J.-TV. Boanland, who was defeated for the office by Dr. Thacker four years ago, and Dr. Thackcr. Mr Flcshor expects to'carry the official support of the Christchurch Citizens' Association, Mr Beanland, who is also a leading niem"ber of the Association, claims that ho is entitled to the official support, but will contest the election whether lie gets it or not. Dr. Thacker .promises to be a candidate if he is not called away to Ireland. ' . The present Mayor, Mr J. AjFleslici, bases his claim to a i'urthov term on tho around that his official work as lioad of the city is not yet completed, and could not possibly he completed in the limited period of two years. Ho was asked yesterdayTo state what v\ oik it was he had in mind and lie replied: "I want to see the Concert Hall project through. Wo have got to a stage V ;hen wo are on the point of culling for tenders. . "There aro matters to ho completed in connexion with the electricity supply of the city. "We expect tho new engineer to 6tart duty on April Ist, and I want to seo him duly installed and the business of tho Works Committee of this city put on as good a footing as possible. "There aro important matters of finance. I am not satisfied with the prosent financial position of the cityjuid I want to see tho finances put oil a footing which will make for the utmost economy and efficiency in tho conduct of the business of the city. "I want to see the whole administration of the city improved." Mr Fleshcr added that before over he first became Mayor, lie had consistently advocated that tlie offioo should bo held for a longer period than two years. That term was altogether too short for any man to complete the work lie considered necessary for the benefit and progress of tho city. Mr Flesher disclaims emphatically having entered into any obligation not to seek a further torm.
