I RUGBY. BOYS' HIGH SCHOOL V. COLLEGE HOUSE. A eloaely-cofitested game *•» witnessed on the High School ground yesterday, when Boys' High School played College House and beat them by 15 points to 18. The School team displayed plenty ot dash, and for «■ great part of tho earlier stages of the game adapted rigorously aggressive tactics. Their backs, however, found it difficult to pierce the defence of the College -aouae division. A feature o! the game was the performance of W. Merritt, the Boys' High School contro three-barter, who soored «Jl of Schools points, scoring their throe tries and converting them all. School kicked off, s®d immediately sot up afi attack, the ball travelling through the hands of Mehrtens, Merritt, and Sylnw. School continued to preai in their opponents' twenty-five, and only vigorous defensive work saved a try. Mehrtena attempted » *"P°t," and College House forced. College House then began to attack, and the 'ball travelled from Brodie to Earl, Bennett, Tc Awarau, and Carr, but the last-named was well tackled when a try eeemed probable. Play settled about half-way. Merritt broke away with the ball at his feet, and School gained gronnd. ■ A High School rash by Harper, Crawshaw, Mehrtens, Merritt, and Calder seemed dangerous, bat the lastnamed wis well tackled. School attacked again and College House forced. Merritt broke away with the b»ll and scored. He converted his own try. College House attacked in return, sad' passing by Karl, Brodie, Te Awarau, sad Bennett remlted in the iMt-named souring. Sari converted. Shortly afterwards, Earl passed to Bennett, who broke away at half-way, and, fending the opposition, scored behind the posts. Bennett missed the kick. School backs then got going and a passing rush resulted »n a try for W. Merritt, who converted It. Half-time came with the score: School 10, College House 6. On resuming, School attaoked. Following lap a punt. Merritt gathered the ball and soored his third trv, which he converted. Shortly after this Earl was hmt. Nad A. J• Dickson (Holieston House) took his place. Xest&rday the seventh round of games in tho Secondary Schools' competition took place, whilst St. Bede's also played ft friendly match against the Chriatchurch Training College team. Results;— ST. The Training .College team playe at 'Varsity A in tho Canterbury Rugby Union third grade, and this season have done well in competition matohes. ' The game was evenly contested throughout, and although Training College won by 5 points to nil, St. Bede's were somewhat unlucky to lose, as one mistake by their full-back gave 'Varsity the only try which was scored. The standard of play on the whole was not very high. Training College were considerably heavier in the forwards, but they failed to make full use of their weight, and wtere more or less consistently boaten in the line-outs and in the scrum work. In the loose the 'Varsity: forwards sbono individually, but St. Bede's shewed more combination. St. Bede's also combined better in the backs, but they lacked the dash of: their opponents. Good tackling and fine individual play marked the Training College rearguard, but they had littlo combination. The only score resulted about' half-w>y through the second spell, when a' 'Versify forward charged down a kick from Connolly, St. Bede's full-back, sod in the race for the line 'Varsity'scorod. , ■> THIRD GRADE. Stewart, Peterson, T. Gilroy and C. Fitzgerald should arrive in Auckland by July 126 th to take part in the first test match against the English team, on August 3rd.
