OBITUARY.

MR T. J. MALING. On Wednesday last, just five months after his wile's • death, Mr Thonias James Maling passed away, in his eighty-seventh year, and yesterday morning was laid to rest in the Birbadoea street ct-nietery. For the last rive years of his life he bad been an invalid, and practically confined to the house, and for the last year to his bed. Mr Maling was well known to the early settlers of Canterlmry. He came out iu lao'2, with his cousin, the Rev. H. 'Bromley Cocks (afterwards vicar of Sydenham). He was the only 6on of Admiral Maling, of Abberley, Worcestershire. The latter was «\ midshipman at the Battle of St. Vincent, and served under Lord Nelson later. A year or two after his arrival in New Zealand, Mr Maling married Rosa Harper, daug.itcr of the first Bishop of Cnristcliurch, and after twice returning to England for some years, iii:,iiy settled in Christchurch, and spent the remainder of his life here, He was a staunch supporter of the Church, and took the keene-t interest in Jill Church matters, as well as in State and sociil welfare, though unable to take much active parti in "them. His unobtrusive kindness and unfailing courtesy will be remembered by many. Mr Maling is survived by three sr-ns and five daughters—the Rev. H. B. Maling, of Norfolk, Engbnd; l\!r J. [Alek Sass was a well-known black and white artist in Ausiralia. He was bora in Wiltshire, England, in 1877, and studied at the Melbourne National Gallery. The Sydney "Bulletin'' published his first 'drawings and for many years his work appeared in Melbourne "Punch." He was also a painter in oils.]
