OBITUARY.

MR SEYMOUR THORNE GEORGE. (press association telegram.) , AUCKLAND, July 3, The death is announoed of Mr Seymour Thome George, ex-M.L.C., aged 71. The late Mr Seymour Thorne George was born in England in 1851, and ufter leaving Cheltenham College came out to the Dominion as a youth of 18. When t!io late .Mr C. E. Button resigned the Ho&itika seat the late Hon. J. Macandrew induced Mr George to contest the election. Although he was only in the electorate six days before polling day, he was successful, and at the following General Election he was elected for Rodney ( ~nd). Ho represented Rodney until ISB4. He contested the Parneli seat, but was defeated.. W heii in the House of Representatives Mr George was Senior Government Whip for some vears. He was called to the Legislative Council in 1903, and served a term. Deceased married a niece of Sir George Grey. Mr John Henry Bratby, who died in Chnstchurch last week, was born at Calais eighty-three years ago, his parents being of English birth. He came to Auckland in 1862 with the Albertland settlers, and for a while was on a coasting vessel that ran stores for the soldiers at the Miranda redoubt, Thames. Then he joined thte Armed Police at Auckland, and aiter two years' service he became manager of the first hotel at Shortland. Subsequently he was proprietor of the Coach and Horses Hotel in Auckland. After a while he joined the firm ut Whitaon and Ly!e, brewers, Newmarket. In 1872 lie joined the Prisons Department as a -warder, became chief -warder at Wellington, then chief warder at Duneoin, and in was ap-. oointed gaoler at Invercarciil.
