Clarissimus, this year's winner., raced only twice as a twp-year-pjd, and at hie second appearance won the Clearwell Stakes at Newmarket, in October last. ASHBURTON COUNTY K.C.'S > AUTUMN MEETING. The weather, though somewhat dull, was by no means unpleasant yesterday for the opening of the Aehburton, County Racing Club's- Autumn Meeting. The attendance, however, was not up jo the usual standard, and the totalisator investments showed a decrease the amount put through yesterday being' £9785 10s, ae compared with £11.714 ■ for. the corresponding day last year. The course was in capital order,, and though the fields were in meet" cases small, there was some very interesting racing. Turning into the straight, Bellshire looked a winner, but in the run home Bandy came through, and won comfortably by two lengths from Finless, who was only • a neck in front of Bellshire, with Ban close up fourth, and San Sebastian fifth. through his eld. • Rounding the turn Chryeotis closed on tho leaders, and when the straight was reached she was in front, while Gnome had had enough, and Oxenhope was also in trouble. Martiue was the only one to soriouely threaten Chi-ysotis in tho straight, but she finished well and won by two lengths. Tho Hawke's Bay Clip in particular, with Balboa, Eligible, Indigo, Multiply, Emporador, and Blackall, amongst tho acceptors, promises a fi ne contest. Club's Autumn Meeting yesterday was rather smaller than the average, and it -was anything but an exciting event, Sot Louie Drift, beginning smartly, led all the way, and won very easily. At the start of the Lagmhor Plate at Ashburton yesterday the tapes carried away, and both Amortir and Glen Helen lost a good deal of ground through their riders being caught in tbem. .J. Bryce, the rider of Glen Helen, had a narrow escape from serious injury. Oxenhope was made a. very warm favourite for the Ashburton Cup yesterday, but though he ran well for over a mile, he was in trouble when the straight was reached. Chrysotie finished very well, and won rather comfortably from Martius, who did not get the best of passages. Tho Ashburton County Racing Club's Autumn Meeting will be concluded today, and with the fields engaged, which aro in most cases larger than thoso that contested yesterday's events, there should be some very interesting racing. A special train will leave Christchurcfy at 10.15 a.m. 3 returning immediately ! after the races.

The Sarto gelding, Bandy, registered a good double performance at Ashburton yesterday, -when he won the Longbeach Hack Handicap, six furlongs, with Bst 91b, and afterwards putting up a lpib penalty, was successful in the Fairfield Welter, seven furlongs, ■with Bst 131b. In each raco Bandy finished very -well, and scored in decisive fashion. B. Price, who won a steeplechase at Randwick on Flash Jack, has enlisted, and goes into camp on his return from Sydney. Another New Zealander, in F. McCabe, is already in camp, but J. N. McGregor was discharged as unfit a few weeks ago. The last-named item is not surprising, for a man who hashad on e hundred odd falls and numerous breakages could hardly stand the wear and tear of war. ■ Although the fields were small at Ashburton yesterday, backers of favourites did not fare particularly well, and Crib, the winner of the Hurdle Handicap, was the only one of the public's first selections that was successful during the day. In his last three races Crib has performed very consistently, for at the C.J.C. Autumn Meeting he won on tho first day, and ran second to Art on the second day, so that in three starts he has registered two wjns and a second. The Ashburton County Racing Club has made some alterations to ite course since the last Meeting was held there. Previously the mile and a quarter races were started on a turn, but a new starting post has now been provided for them, which givee the competitors a straight run before they reach the course proper. From the public point of view, a much appreciated improvement is the construction of a flight of concrete steps in front of the grandstand.
